After having IE6 for the longest time, I finally caved in because a ton of people were telling me Firefox is better. I switched, eh, a week ago, and it is great. Much better than Internet Explorer even if it was an older version.

I'm using Firefox 3.0.11 since it has too many good extensions whose functionality is not available in other browsers. The most important ones are Adblock Plus and NoScript.

I do have Chrome 3.0.190.4 installed (I'm on the experimental branch since the stable branch wouldn't work properly with Windows 7 64-bit) and set as my primary browser. This is so that any HTML files or links won't interfere with my Firefox session, especially if Firefox isn't already started.

EDIT: Upgraded to Firefox 3.5.

Since I've not tested them both enough I really don't know if the Opera block feature is as good.

I don't use internet explorer simply because, to me, it runs slower, I don't like the excess browsers, and many viruses are internet explorer specific, albeit that's changing.

So I've used mozilla firefox without issues, but if someone can convince me of a better browser, I may experiment it with instead.

Although at the cost of sending this off-topic, has anybody tried Minefield (http://www.mozilla.org/projects/minefield/) yet? Unbelievably fast, supposedly even more so than Chrome, too. But Safari 4 (http://www.paulspoerry.com/2009/02/25/apples-safari-4-browserbeta-destroys-others-in-browser-benchmarks/) might blow all of these away if these early numbers are any indication.

I have Safari 4 right now and the problem with it is... even though it out performs other browsers such as Chrome and Firefox, it still cannot hold a candle to Firefox (in my opinion). It has faster Rendering speed and what not, but in the end, it almost doesn't matter because the improvement in speed isn't even conceivable by human eyes and it is limited by your download speed and computer speed as well.

What Firefox has that obliterates most browsers in my opinion is the ability have add-ons. Being a web developer and all, I find that Safari's built in stuff is solid, but having these add-ons for Firefox gives it so much more expandability.

Most does not correlate with best.

It certainly has the best addons too, but don't imply that more is better. A majority of the FF plugins are ****, or duplicates of other FF plugins.

I couldn't find my way through the amount of ****, so I gave up. The gems were just too hidden in a sea of ****.

Opera widgets also suck. I generally hate widgets anyway. They're gimmicky by nature and serve little purpose. I'd rather Opera went for a full blown addon kit too.

NoScript, if it does what it says on the box, could potentially cripple smaller sites that aren't yet on the whitelist. Which, to be honest, is a depressing situation.

Not a fan of NoScript. Most of the time it's your own fault if you cripple your PC with a malicious script on sites you shouldn't be on. [/rage]

Also, I finally gave Opera Widgets another try and have decided that the Twitter Widget is quite decent.

Well, as an Opera user I've always been annoyed at the lack of auto-updates.

In fact, as a PC user in general, not having my PC automate tedious and boring tasks has always annoyed me.

Having to be alerted to download something, or to have to check manually is something of the far past.

It's a matter of convinience. It's something that every piece of software should have if it expects to be constantly updating (which, Opera is, just not very often).

As a developer, I can see that it's lazy not to, and as a user it's just annoying to have to manually do it.

There is no reason not to. It wouldn't even take that long to code compared to other parts of the browser.

I presume that guitar site either failed to specify a default font or is using a font that is nonstandard or not available in chrome, since it seems to be a different font family entirely. Maybe even font size too.

I'd blame the site, not the browser, in this instance. IE has broken the web more and more on every iteration.

In all honesty Kaixx, I like Opera a lot.
I actually suggest to people to get Opera moreso than Firefox these days only because Firefox hasn't made any improvements to their usability since they became popular.

The same thing can be said about Safari, IE and I guess Chrome can get a pass because it's new.

I was playing around with Opera Unite and Widgets the other day.
Personally, I feel that Opera is the only browser that actually tries doing more than just being a browser. Firefox, Chrome, Safari and Internet Explorer talk the big game, but I still haven't seen anything substantial.

I really, honestly, could care less how fast a browser is at this point. Some of their claims are ridiculous mostly because their speeds are already so fast, it's not even human perceivable anymore.

The only thing that stops me from using Opera, really, is the add-on support. Widgets suck. Tremendously. Some of their web developer support suck tremendously too. I still have Opera Dragonfly to play around with but... that's something else that I'd have to spend time looking into.

AoX

I would gladly use Opera more now because it seems my Firefox 3.5 is bugging extremely (locking up, slow performance, etc.), but it boils down to code-compability and, indeed, add-ons. Unless there is a setting somewhere in Opera that manages to screw the pages up, I can't use it as much as I would like.

The only thing that stops me from using Opera, really, is the add-on support. Widgets suck. Tremendously. Some of their web developer support suck tremendously too. I still have Opera Dragonfly to play around with but... that's something else that I'd have to spend time looking into.

The widgets are pretty damn poor. The standalone Facebook one doesn't even work. Especially since Opera is changing so much in it's subsequent releases. They don't seem to care if they "break the web". Which is my favourite attitude, since if you don't spend forever writing backwards compatible code, people will be much more willing not to sit back and not upgrade their old site. It's also good for the economy (gets more cash flowing from companies to developers). [/disgress] But, it doesn't help their widget support much.

Anyway, the majority of pages online work with Opera. There are a few major ones that don't. And some functionality is lowered, like there is no WYSIWYG editor support in a lot of places, unless it's entirely JS, how it should be.

I've only had problem with UK government sites, some sites looking slightly stupid because they use floating frames (reeeetaaaaaards) and a few sites dotted around that serve Firefox only, at which point I press F12, click "Edit site preferences", go to the network tab and tell it to pretend to be Firefox. Easy. ;)

erm, im not really about add-ons and updates - if it runs, it's good in my book.
so i use firefox. im not really a fan of safari just because i don't like the interface, and as for IE, well, i just prefer firefox. i tried opera, and it had some nice features, but nothing about it really struck me as a must-have, and the interface reminded me of safari, so i just went back to FF.

I've used IE 6 and 7 and now use IE 8.

At school I've used Firefox. It isn't a bad browser, it runs good. I've tried using Opera, but because of my stupidity, I don't go farther than the first page, probably because only my Dad has Opera, on his laptop and desktop, and his homepage is a KnightFight server, and I just don't want to screw with it.

Google Chrome is a good browser. But I see it as too simple when I open it, no already open favoite tabs.

IE 8 is a good one, though I miss IE 6. 8 gives the "Internet Explorer Cannot Display the Webpage." when I'm connected to the internet, the site I'm on isn't having problems, and there are no typing errors in the address because most sites i have favorited or on my browser history. 6 wouldn't do that unless the site's server was down or my internet was down, it didn't give my those cannot display notices for no reason. 6 may not have all the add ons, but it was pretty fast and relieble.

I DID! I had to, I know that to view webpages that dont actually need to run in compatibility mode, i needed IE8.

Oh an i tried opening that link in a new tab.... then tried to switch to that tab once it loaded -which this browser has trouble with loading things in another tab- I couldn't, the browser froze, not responding. Now restore that session...same thing....Yes I know that IE6 is crap today, it worked better with me probably because that's the browser bundled with my computer which is 6 years old? IE 8 isnt working very good for a 6 year old discontinued inspiron 5150 running on XP SP 2 is it now?.

As a web developer...
The only thing we're looking for is a browser that will run CSS2 and XHTML without jacking things up.
Never said to corner yourself into a browser choice either so don't.

There are A LOT of lightweight browsers out there that does a better job than IE6 does.

IE6 did fail the acid2 browser performance test.
In fact, all acid2 is, is the browser's performance in rendering CSS code.

This is what it should look, if it did passed.
http://files.myopera.com/tarquinwj/albums/45511/3IE8.png - IE8

CSS2 and XHTML is the standard for the Present.
Just to give you an idea of why everyone is pushing for the death of IE6:
CSS3 and HTML5 (XHTML2.0+) is coming out SOON.
Mozilla and Apple have already shipped some updates with CSS3 and HTML5.
There is no reason for anyone to support IE6 when HTML5 and CSS3 becomes the standard.
Unfortunately, users who are still on IE6 whether it's a choice or not... they're completely screwed.

Being me, I am picky.

CSS2 and XHTML are not programming languages. They're actually even more important to the user than that. They're what the browsers use to display websites. Without cross-browser standards, we have sites that look different for almost every different browser. Which sucks for everyone, since then you can't have fancy features.

When I used Chrome it was pretty great at first - but the more I used it, the more bugs I kept finding then it eventually felt sluggish.

Opera is always consistent for me. My only beef with it is that it'll automatically delete images in tabs I haven't viewed in a while, but I don't know if that's a feature or just a bug. I still have Firefox for a few add-ons, but it always makes me cry when someones reasoning for using a browser as their main is for the add-ons (and Ad-Block+ is always mentioned). Especially when Opera COMES with an ad blocker. A lot of people seem to not know that. :| I don't use it myself because I don't see the point, though.

The one beef I have with Chrome is its commands within the text editor of this forum (and many others); ctrl+b does not make the text bold, nor ctrl+i for italics, also rather than seeing bolded text within the reply box, all you see is the bold tags around the words. Firefox 3.6.13 For Ubuntu Linux
When i was a windows user i got fed up with IE crashing so I tried netscape and a few others but they all failed in comparison to firefox and chrome does not hove enough of my favorite add ons to be of any real use to me like video downloadhelper, download them all and the personas gallery.

On Firefox 4 on my new desktop. I haven't experienced any of these memory leak issues yet, and the browser has been a pleasure for me to use : )
I absolutely need FF's customize-ability, only thing that is keeping me back from being a Chrome user haha

Since I'm a Linux junkie, I prefer Mozilla Firefox. Very easy to write add-ons for, and is much quicker than the likes of Konqueror or Google Chrome on my optimised setup.
On my Windows partition I still use Firefox as to be in a familiar environment.
