Anime-Forums Donations.

This announcement is just to let the public know about the happenings of the inside of Anime-Forums.

I'll start of with the money issues we have been having.
Roughly a month ago, A4 was kicked off its old server because it was monopolizing the entire server meaning that A4 was slowing down every other website on it because of A4's activity.
Instead of taking Anime-Forums down we purchased a dedicated server so we can not only keep it up, but have room to grow.
The problem is that dedicated servers can be expensive and A4 needs to cover its costs.

I recently put a "Paypal Donate" at the bottom of every page so if anyone can spare some money (even if its just poo change) it would be a greatly help with keeping Anime-Forums on the internet. Thank you.

I plan to make a hefty donation soon, Bryce, but I'm kinda in the hole right now. But I will eventually. I feel somewhat responsible for the Tokyo Tekki thing, and this would be a good way to make up for it.

Well, my sister got a credit card, and I'm trying to convince her to let me use it for a donation one of these days. I may have to swipe it from her for a few minutes. XD But, yeah, I'll be sending a donation soon hopefully...

Why dont you just charge a small members fee? abit like live journal (just a random example!) like you pay alittle money you get a few extras (the extra i leave up to you) i mean it wouldnt cost too much to run the fourms then, and you might make a small profit (which im sure will be put right backinto makin the fourms even better!) (by small fee i mean like $5/$10 a year or something but still with free accounts) no montly fees tho they really suck, or even a lifetime fee of like <amount here> ok ive said enough.

Our userbase is mainly kids in high school though, most of whoom do not have credit cards or a paypal account. Wouldn't be feasible, plus its a forum alone, you don't really get anything by joining the site, so to speak.

I like Little_Kimi_'s idea, we're still working out the 'perks' that the paying users will have in the council, till then I am still keeping the names of those who have so they wont miss out.
Anyway, this months server paymet is due in 6 days and I've only gotten less than 20% of what the server costs from donations :?

SEE i knew i was useful for sumthing ;) to dnt go power hungry are changre people tons! lol if you want give me the figures of how many users and whso donated how much its cost you do run the place and i could work out a nice fee :P so its monthly you pay then? you could changre for 6 months of use then thats only 2 payments twice a year, wouldnt be so bad...... god damn i hate maths...... i dunno why im so good at it

Like Ian said, most of our users are high school students who don't have a Paypal account or a credit card. Those who are younger than that, which I know we do have younger users, won't be able to pay. Making people pay is a rediculous idea. I'm going to try and donate anywhere from 10 to 25 dollars a month to help keep the site up.

it isnt rediculous, its the same thing really, people need paypal to donate right? people will need paypal to pay a fee, same thing. Tehre will still be FREE accounts, for those who cant pay. it just means Knuckles here might get alittle more. i defend my idea! my idea rules..... yer just jealous.... :(

My problem is by having a distinctive difference between payed accounts and non-pay accounts, on some sites I've seen you seem to get a sort of resentment between the different users. If its just a donation thing where people can pay as they like, theres not such a sense of elitism that can form... I dunno though. It might work, may be worth a try. ^_^ I'd just like to see some plans actually layed out how it'll all work and what the differences between the two account types would be and such. =)

I've also seen the resentment that can form between paying and non-paying users. If you are going to start giving perks to paying users I do have some suggestions.


Paying users donating a particular amount 20 dollars or so..should get a seat on the council and non-paying users should not be allowed to be members of the council. If I was helping to pay for this site I think I should have a say in what occurs in it's administration. At the least, I think paying members should get a vote on who joins the council and who does not.....

Paying users can use avatars and custom titles while non paying users cannot. This may seem silly but these little bells and whistles mean a lot to many users. It will be a real incentive to donate.

I, for one, would be more willing to cough up some of my hard earned cash if I knew that I would have more of a say in what went on around here. I really like the idea of voting for council members.

it's an ok idea... but like mentioned... i personaly can give very little... no job... 2 dollar allowance (per week)... and jewish parents(not religous, but stinngy)... and my mom also thinks that the internet will steal her credicard if i use it soo... eventually when i get a job... prolly over summer.... i'll churn out like $40 a month for the cause... :wink:
