View Full Version : Member Warnings
I couldn't help but notice this board doesn't have member warnings. I guess that means 1 strike and you're out.
It's very useful to have a warning system. If you've never seen one before, go here (http://dynamic3.gamespy.com/~soaworld/ikonboard/ikonboard.cgi). Look at someone's post, and next to there name you will see a green bar. There are 5 increment levels. 5 warnings and you're banned.
Now, i'm not saying we need to use green bars and have a 5-level warning system, but it's very useful for hushing troublesome members. They get 5 chances and they're banned. I'm a moderator there, and trust me, it works very well.
I'd say if this board supports it start out with a 2 level warning system, and if it works out go from there. What do you think?
i agree, although im not a mod. sometimes we get a little crazy (bad day, cramps, depression...) and i think a warning system is a good idea.

That is a good idea put we do have a system where we PM a member about a warning.
Well, that's not really a built-in system, most moderator groups do send verbal warnings.

There are existing 'warning card' hacks for PHPBB which is similar to professional soccer warning cards (green, yellow and red cards).
However, i dont think A4 really needs it at the moment. Currently we have a "Watch List" where we post troublesome users that we have already warned, if anyone is on here, and still breaks rules, they get banned.
This system seems to work just fine so I think we'll leave it is for the time being.
OK. Just remember, someday you might want it. This place isn't big enough for it yet, i guess.

That seems like a good idea but is it really necessary. It will aloow you to have other memeber pick on you cuase they know that you cant screw up.

"Verbal" warnings? Why does that strike me as laughable?
I think it's unnecessary. If a person can’t get it together after several warnings, he and/or she (you never know with some of these users O.o ) really does deserve to be exiled, no doubt. How can that system not work?
Hm, but yeah, I do see something here... Some people are so dense that they don’t know it’s a warning before them, and not a...non-warning... Most of us get it, though, don’t we?
Oh, but this color-coded thing... If it was implemented, there’s got to be a different way to use it, if the system could be altered a bit. In the post above this one, it was mentioned that that leaves way for the potential of poking fun of the souls that just...screwed up. Yeah, it may be fun to team up on people and abuse them, say, in the chatroom, but let’s try to be fair here. Henceforth, I say that this colorful warning system be one that only the violator can see...like when a post is made, or upon signing in.
"Hey, guess what! You’re reached warning level three! Congratulations!! ^^ Just two more bouts of misconduct and you get showed the door! ^_^"
That might be difficcult to do, but it's worth a try. Generally it's public, everyone can see your warnings. Please listen to me though, i've spent more than a year in a forum that has used this system extensivly, and i know the pros and cons of using it. And i'm a mod there, too, so i've used the system myself several times.
If you want to warn a member, the mods can see a "warn member" button under each member's name when they post. When you press it, you can enter the warn sreen where you can choose the number of times you want to increment their warning level, and send a message to them along with the warnings if you wish.
It's proved useful, yet sometimes proved harmful. Nothing is perfect. Here's a list of the ups and downs to this system:
Good:
A more advanced and intimidating system of getting troublesome users to obey the forum rules. If a member values his/her membership on the forums and is warned, they'll have learned their lesson and will probably stop causing trouble.
Bad:
Sometimes members who have been warned become rebellious and ignorant - believing they either don't deserve it or have been given injustice.
The best way to prevent this is to not tease or abuse the member. If you're going to warn him/her, make sure you justify yourself in your warning message, and don't say anything offensive or anything that would strike anger towards you or others.
It could cause the user to just get him/herself into more trouble and eventually get themselves banned, then people would start blaming the moderators.
You have to be careful when warning a member. Be empathetic in your warning message.
Yes, the system has proved a succesful tool in ever case. We (SoAWorld) have had some issues in the past, but we've learned from them now.
Keep in mind a warning system is supposed to be a last resort option; for members who just don't get it. Usually, you'll send a verbal warning first, to warn the member of their misconduct. If they show a continous pattern of breaking the rules, then it's time to use the warning system. Based on the negative influence their misbehavior had on the boards, goes to the number of warnings the user deserves.
