*sighs* There I go again with my long absence. I'm beginning to think I can't do this anymore. There's so many things going on with my life that I can't possibly update this club as much as I'd like to. If anyone is interested in becoming the *gasp* new Azumanga Daioh club leader, be active, and help Azumanga Daioh retain it's glory, please post here, why you are worthy enough of the responsibility that I myself could not hold. I promise to keep checking the board until I find a potential club leader. While I'll still be part of the club, posting when I can, I will no longer be the leader. Is anyone interested?
Thanks for being such great members, and helping me out with this great club. I'll surely miss you guys. ^^ - kyokyo's latest post
**ADDENDUM BY AVI-CHAN**
I didn't want to remove kyokyo's message, because of the awesomeness of starting the club, but I will put here that there is a new club leader, and that would be me. ^^
I won't be doing much this week, because I have exams and a paper due, but starting Monday, I'll get a new discussion up for us to start with. Cool? Cool.
If anyone has any suggestions for discussion topics, please PM me and let me know. I'll start with something generic on Monday, but will try to get a little more creative as time goes on.
Thanks, guys. I'll try to do my best for teh club. ^^

It's AZUMANGA DAIOH!
This club is for all Azumanga Daioh lovers, whether you are a manga reader or an anime watcher! We're here to talk about Azumanga Daioh, what you thought about the series, characters you liked/disliked, why Chiyo-chan is so smart, why Yomi bothers to keep being friends with Tomo, why Kimura is a creepy guy...
*ahem*
Every week, we will have a new topic to talk about, and share our feelings about it. But really, this club is just here so Azumanga Daioh fans can unite and have fun!
NOTE: This club does NOT have a ranking system.
Owner: Avi-chan
Co-owner: gaming_otaku
RULES:
 You must be a fan of Azumanga Daioh, to join. However, you still must take a simple (very simple) test to prove that you're into Azumanga Daioh.
 No put downs on the show or each other (flaming)
 Please be respectful to each other and each other's opinions
 No spamming
 No double posting. At least try not to. Please use the edit button if your post was the last one.
 All members must have either a banner or some text in their sig that shows they are part of the club. Why join the club if you don't want to have club spirit?
 All A4 rules still apply.
 Stay on topic. PLEASE. Or at least try to
HOW TO JOIN:
Please only PM me, Avi-chan, owner of this club, to join. There was a club quiz, but since I don't have it, I'm going to discontinue it until further notice. Just so you know. Once you're approved, you're a member. That's all. ^^
And let's try to keep our club active, shall we? There's going to be more of a crackdown on inactive clubs, and I don't want this one to be included in it. Thanks. ^^
If you are NOT a member of the club, please don't post on the club thread. It's easy to join; once again, just PM me.

UPDATED AS OF 10/31!
Note from Avi-chan: Do people still like the whole featured character and topic thing? If not, we'll have to figure something else out on how to make the club active, or it'll have to be disbanded. ;-; Throw some ideas out there if you have any!
FEATURED CHARACTER:
Every two weeks, there will be a new featured character, where all topics and activities will focus on him/her.
And the featured character of the moment is...
Chiyo-chan!
TOPIC OF THE WEEK:
--Many people find incredibly cute characters in anime to be either really awesome or really annoying. Where do you rank Chiyo-chan, and why? And a goofy bit: what's your favourite Chiyo moment?
CURRENT CLUB ACTIVITY:
No clue! Any suggestions?

Agreed. :D But we love 'em all anyway, which is why we're here (I'd assume, haha).
Can't wait for this club to kick off full force, should be good times all around! Big praise to Kyokyo and gaming_otaku for gettin' this thing rollin', and hello everyone!

So I might as well ask a question, who is your favorite character? Mine would be both Osaka and Mr.Kimura.
Tsali
11-06-2004, 07:05 PM
Osaka and Kaorin are mine. Osaka because... well, she's Osaka. And Kaorin because they don't show her much, and when they do she's usually having some kinda problem related to Mr. Kimura or Sakaki. So I feel a bit sorry for her, but it's really nice seeing her small triumphs throughout the series. I'd make a Kaorin-themed club banner if I could, but alas, I have no skills whatsoever at that.

Hi there everyone! First off, I'd like to introduce myself. I am gaming_otaku, the co-owner of the Azumanga Daioh club. I'd like to formally welcome every one of our members to the club. Thanks to everyone who joined this club for the support you've given it until now. Thanks to all of you, we finally made this happen. I know we're going to have a lot of fun, as long as we follow the rules  So let's get things started:
So I might as well ask a question, who is your favorite character? Mine would be both Osaka and Mr.Kimura.
Being our first club meeting, I also thought of this question to help get to know our members a little bit and the things they like about Azumanga Daioh (Nabeshin Warrior beat me to it :D ). So thanks to Nabeshin Warrior for getting us started: this week's topic is Who is/are your favorite character(s)?
I like all the characters a lot; however, the ones I like the most (although by very little) are Osaka and Kagura.
Anyway, let's have some fun!
Can't wait for this club to kick off full force, should be good times all around! Big praise to Kyokyo and gaming_otaku for gettin' this thing rollin', and hello everyone!
Thanks!
Y'know... one of these days I'm gonna run around like Kimura-sensei.

Yay, I'm glad people found the club thread...it's been in process of being approved for so long I don't know if our members even expected it to start up this year :P
Anyway! Welcome everyone! I'm kyokyo and I'll be your club leader for this wonderful Azumanga Daioh experience. I decided to start up this club because of the lack of an Azumanga Daioh board at A4. Now all us Azumanga fans can unite! Ok, enough of my extra corny speech. ^^;
Response to the topic: My favorite character is Sakaki. She's oh-so cool and collected, and everyone likes her, AND she's a super sports star...but she likes cutesy things! Now that's what I call a character. lol
Tomorrow we'll be starting up the first club activity. I just hope more people will be able to find the thread by then. :)

Response to topic of the week: My overall favorite character on Azumanga Daioh is Kagura. I also have a crush on her so thats one reason why shes my favorite. She is also very kind and nice and cool and she likes to work out. She is usually silly and funny and somewhat clueless but she can also be serious sometimes (3rd year sports fest) which is something else i like about her. Overall i luv all the characters on Azumanga Daioh but Kagura is my favorite.

Yaay, finally up and running
Favourite character is no doubt Osaka. I can't count the number of times she's made me laugh, her childish naivety is just so funny, and her imagination is something else. Chiyo-chan country...

11-07-2004, 06:16 PM
Ok, I like Osaka because she's always so spaced out and she always thinks about things that no one else would. She thinks very differently from us :D
I also like Kagura because she's kinda cool and cute at the same time. I like the way she always wants to compete with Sakaki and how she always spoils her cutsey fantasies. I also like how she's kinda' slow (kind of a numbnut :D ) too, which is really funny. She's also kinda' sentimental, though she hides it under her rough appearance.

YAY!
ok well my fav char would def hav to be Chiyo Chan cos shes well sweet and all that and lotsa funny things happen to her e.g. hit by the ball, and gets scared all the time etc etc.... and also cos shes a lil naive about things which kinda reflects my personality a lil bit... ^^

Yay for the Azumanga Daioh club! ^^
My favourite characters are Yukari and Yomi. If I was a teacher, I almost wish I was like Yukari, simply for the humour value. XD
Yomi's fun 'cause she's the only semi-normal person around. That makes her responses to the craziness of her cohorts even better. XD again
Yay, club! :D

Yeah, I've noticed that kyuu always goes into random clubs and posts. I actually don't mind since he does it with almost all the clubs BUT if he starts to randomly spam useless things then he will have to leave. Ok with that kyuu? :P Any other people who would like to post in this club must be a member. It's easy, just PM me :)
Kimura...I just don't get that guy's deal. He's a perverted freak with the high school girls and is really open about it...but he donates to charity and has a nice family (and a klutzy wife).
Yukari...I love Yukari. She's just so funny! Her and Nyamo together is just plain hilarious.
Everyone got a PM talking about the new contest. Please PM gaming_otaku or I back with your response, we will decide to start it depending on how many people are interested. Thank you! ^^

It's a deal.
Considering I've read the mangas, it'll be a while before I get into useless spammage.
And so, with my posting skillz, I shall help this thread some. :D
For example:
Yukari...I love Yukari. She's just so funny! Her and Nyamo together is just plain hilarious.
Who can point out some advantages or disadvantages that this pair have over each other?
i.e. Nyamo is more controlled and disciplined... while Yukari can speak languages (and makes fun of Nyamo to foreigners  ).

Yukari's just taking advantage of the fact that she can speak English to make fun of Nyamo, it seems. I mean, they try to make Yukari so insane as a teacher that there's really no other explanation. :D
Still, you need Nyamo to counter Yukari's insanity and irresponsibility. Otherwise, where would the humour come from? ^^

Oh yea, how about the fact that Nyamo has better stuff than Yukari just because Nyamo is much much better with money.

Yes, but it is funny to see Nyamo get drunk and tell Chiyo-chan...stuff...just because she's a very likeable character. It's nice to see them pull a Yukari sometimes, yeah? And the way she gets confused when Yukari and a foreigner are "blah"ing...funny, funny. Same with the other girls...like Kagura for example...there's that one chapter where she wanted to help out the foreigner and all of a sudden she says..."YAY"...uhm...yeah.

I love the part during the third year sports fest and yukari and nyamo are racing. The photo shots of Yukari loosing, gettign angry, going for the dive, knockign nyamo over, and then both of them on the ground. I love it. Another oppositses attract theory is Tomo and Yomi. Their like the odd couple.

I've been thinking: wouldn't it be cool if Kiohiko Azuma would make a sort of Azumanga Daioh prequel that shows Yukari and Nyamo's own antics when they were highschoolers? Think about it: we'll finally be able to see all of Nyamo's embarassing moments that Yukari always threatens to tell. We could see them fighting each other for dumb things like they always do, and many more things; all with the same Azumanga Daioh spirit. Don't you think it'd be cool?

Yeah, that would be very cool to see, I was always hoping that at some point it would explain some of that stuff, like the bit with the "love letter", but they left it a mystery.
I'd also really like to see a sequal of sorts, with the girls all grown up (25-30, of course not Chiyo-chan though) and see where they're at in life.
Avi-chan

I'd prefer a sequel to the girls of Azumanga Daioh rather than a prequel with their teachers. I kind of like the "mystery" of not knowing these embarassing stories of Nyamo's. It makes her reactions funnier. ^^
Even just an "epilogue" episode, showing where everyone is would be cool. Then again, it leaves lines open for speculation.
OOOH a decent discussion topic! Where would y'all see the Azumanga Daioh girls ten years after they graduate?
*NOTE* don't use it as a topic now, but maybe one of our distinguished club leaders would look at it and consider it? ^^

That's a very good topic, I'll consider it for next week's topic.
Anyway, I don't think I'd like to see them "all grown-up" because I think it wouldn't be the same, and would somehow spoil the Azumanga Daioh charm. Seeing Yukari and Nyamo as highschoolers, on the other hand, can still retain that charm. But that's just my opinion.
Anyway, I don't think I'd like to see them "all grown-up"
Actually, they would be massively boring if they were... "grown up"...

Yeah, she'd probably start a coup to get them all out or something. Well, actually, she probably wouldn't, but if Kagura found out about the situation, I think she'd do it for Sakaki. Wouldn't that be an interesting little episode.
I always pictured Sakaki starting up a mom 'n pop pet store. Of course Kaorin could tag along as her assistant manager... which'd make it a mom 'n mom pet store. :D

Okay, club update time!
Since you guys have already gone on a tangent about the characters growing up, you've conventiently given a new topic for the club to talk about. Big thanks to Avi-chan for suggesting it. So here it is if you haven't been following the board: How do you visualize the Azumanga Daioh characters 5, 10 or 15 years after the story concludes? Please make sure you don't spoil the series for anyone who hasn't seen the entire thing yet.
gaming_otaku will be gone over the weekend, so if you have any questions or comments for him, you can PM him and he will respond after he gets back. Or if it's about club matters, remember, I'm always here ;)
Okay, since a few people seemed to have shown interest in this, we'll give the banner contest a try. Banner skills or no, it doesn't matter! Trying and having fun is what counts. But remember, this isn't a requirement. Here are the rules, please follow them (if you recieved a PM from gaming_otaku, it might look familiar):
1) Since the idea of the banner contest is to make a banner that suits any and all members, you must, at least, make six different banners, one for each main character of the anime/manga: Chiyo-chan, Osaka, Yomi, Sakaki, Tomo, and Kagura. If you would like to make banners for Yukari, Nyamo, Kimura, Kaorin, Chihiro, and any of the animals (Kami-neko, Neko Koneko, Mr. Tadakichi, etc.) or other students, or otherwise make a single banner with all the characters, feel free to, as long as you have the six main characters mentioned above, it’s OK.
2) Size: The maximum size for all banners will be 200x75. Do not exceed this limit, or else your banners will not be counted, or you’ll have to resize them.
3) Please either send the banner links to me (kyokyo) or gaming_otaku. Don't post them on the board for everyone to see, we don't want to ruin the surprise for anyone now do we? Again, send them as links, please!
4) All A4 rules regarding the content of images and the content of the overall forum apply.
5) Just have fun. The whole idea of the contest is to have fun as a club. Remember that this isn’t some incredibly serious contest, it’s just some friendly competition and a club activity :)
At the end of TWO WEEKS from today (the 11th of November), the contest will end. Wow, I guess it ends on Thanksgiving Day then...hehe. Isn't it funny how things turn out? *ahem* anyway, once again, all banners are due to me on Thanksgiving Day (November 25th). On the day after, the members (that's all of you!) will vote for the set of banners you like best. The winner gets to have their banners featured as the official club banners in place of the old ones. If you don't want to upload them on your own space, then I'll be happy to upload them.
Once again, good luck and have fun with it.

Oooh, I can't wait to see the banners! Good luck, everyone!
Well, here's my take:
Chiyo-chan: Chiyo will either be a teacher or maybe a diplomat or something. She had good negotiation skills. ^^
Sakaki: Probably a vet. When she gets home, she's a crazy cat lady with about six cats. ^^
Tomo: Motivational speaker. XD Either that, or a teacher in the style of Yukari. That'd be funny. ^^
Yomi: Yomi would probably work in an office of some sort (maybe a secretary?) and would spend her weekends drinking with Tomo.
Osaka: God, Osaka...Don't even know where to begin there. XD
Kagura: Gym teacher, or an aerobics instructor or something. That girl will go far in the sports field. ^^
If I think of any more for anyone, I'll throw it up here. ^^
Well... they all graduate.
Sakaki: Probably a vet. When she gets home, she's a crazy cat lady with about six cats. ^^
Multiply that number by 12.
Osaka: God, Osaka...Don't even know where to begin there. XD
I see her as a convict. After all, she "tried" to kill Yukari.

sakaki would be likely to start a pet club in school.
Well, I'd hate to see her working in an animal shelter. Why? Well, y'have an idea what goes on in there, right? 8O
That would be horrible for her.

Alright, since I had an extra long post yesterday, I didn't put up my thoughts about the topic :P So here they are...
First of all, Chiyo-chan will either get into politics or become a lawyer. Hey, maybe she will become the president of the US...hm.
Tomo will...erm...actually, I think Tomo will surprise us all and get a decent job.
Yomi will start work at Bally's. :P
Sakaki would most likely want to be a vet, but the animals might all hate her, making her end up as a florist...or the Salesperson at the toy store.
Osaka will be a professor at some university. Hey, it could happen.
Kagura seems the type to pursue her love for sports. Maybe she'll become a basketball star or represent Japan in the Olympics with her running skills.
Yukari will become the principal of the school and Nyamo will be promoted to language teacher  Okay, maybe not.
.........

Ah! I'm so late at getting here! >< Sorry! ^_^; My favorite character on Azumanga Daioh is Osaka! She's just so funny. ^_^ Like that one episode when they go to Chiyo-chan's summer home and Osaka wants to wake up Yukari with a pan or something. Then she accidently grabs a knife instead. ROFL! That was so funny! Yukari's was all freaked out. ^____^
As for the second question... ... I have no idea where I would see them in 10-15 years. @_@
Kni \ / es
11-12-2004, 11:07 AM
I love Azumanga Daioh, and I'm glad to be a part of the club! ^_^
But as for my favorite character, that'd definately be Osaka, cause she's all airheaded and goofy. She's hilarious!
As for the second question, I'd see Chiyo becoming a scientist or something like that, Sakaki would be a sports star, Kagura would be on Sakaki's rival team, Tomo would be standing in front of a store in a goofy costume trying to get people to buy their merchandise, Yomi would be pretty ordinary, and Osaka would work on developing a cure for the hiccups!

Heres my thought of what will happen in 5-15 years.
Tomo: Will amazingly become ultra sexy and become a supermodel (and possible Yomi's lover).
Yomi: A Japanese Idol that sweeps the worl with her voice (and possibly Tomo's lover).
Chiyo Chan: She will be the president of a very powerful company in Japan. She'll probably still have Mr. Tadakichi with her when she invents a device secretly to let him live for a long time.
Sakaki: Either a pet store owner, work as a tour for Iriamote island in Okinawa, or own an combination of homade stuffed animals, florist, and pet store shop. Sakaki may also become a representative of Japans running team for the olympics and may be given many contracts by sports teams across Japan and maybe even the world.
Kagura: Be a Sports anchor/ be the representative of Japans swim team for the olympics. She coudl also be a sports star for a sports team as well.
Osaka: She'll probably get married and have a happy family. She'll probably work at Chiyo's company and get paid veru well.
Nyamo and Yukari: Nyamo might get married and finnaly have a family and get a new house to live in but still work at the school. Yukari will still work at the school and will amazingly get driving lessons and become a better driver and her own car.

To answer the topic, where I see the girls in ten years or so:
Chiyo-chan - Perhaps a very young lawyer or TV Anchorwoman. Or maybe her folks are so rich that she won't even have to get a job.
Tomo - Either a policewoman, or constantly in and out of prison. I totally see her as the type of person to walk up to a stranger on the street, and punch them or steal something from them just to see a reaction.
Sakaki - Running a pet store, most likely.
Kaorin - Sakaki's assistant, and still constant devoted follower.
Yomi - I see her as a business woman (possible secratary) or a writer. She'll probably also keep an apartment with Tomo, or at least live in the same building. Or maybe in an ironic twist, she joins the police department with Tomo so they won't be apart.
Osaka - Teacher, no doubt about it. I'm thinking literature or history, plus she can teach her students the true value of free thought (sometimes unknowingly). Perhaps she could be Yukari's apprentice, haha.
Kagura - Olympic swimmer possibly, or involved in some other sport (perhaps a coach).
Yukari and Nyamo - Still teaching, Nyamo hopefully with a family, and Yukari hopefully with some sanity.
Kimura - Mental Health Clinic.

I know of 5 people that are in, but some of them haven't introduced themselves to the board yet (I've asked some of them before the club started). gaming_otaku was the one who sent out the invites also, so he's probably got the names of the rest of the people who were interested, so I'll ask him about it once he gets back.
Hopefully those people who said they were interested will find their way to the board soon. But there is two weeks for this contest anyway, so no rush at all :)

ahh yes fun fun club topic of the week
Osaka - she'll be dead due to drug overdose because someone told her it would be fun.
Kasuga - 3 time japanese olympics gold metalist
Sakaki - Veteranarian duh?
Chiyo - ritired in a fricken mansion for being a child prodigy all the media and publicity(she's in america now she went here to go to college) unless they continue azumanga daioh and keep her in japan this is what im going to have to assume.
Tomo - Prostitute constantly competing to be best in bed?
Yomi - umm... this is tough id have to say a political leader of some sort of probably a computer programmer?
ahh yes no offense to the tomo or osaka fans. Those 2 characters are personally my absolute favorite just a smidge below kaorin. Lol I just thought id throw in a joke about tomo's competitiveness and osaka's airheadedness
add - http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v157/ShinobuAlbum/Gifs/tomo-one.gif
it took me 3 hours to cut this it was a gif of tomo i put together i had to cut her img frame by frame it was NOT fun. But the outcome is a pretty neat tomo badge

Sniff  I won't be able to make the deadline for the banner contest, I'm overloaded with school work!
Question! Will I be able to use my own personnal banner?
The rules state that and I quote:
All members must have either a banner or some text in their sig that shows they are part of the club. Why join the club if you don't want to have club spirit?
So basically, even if it's not an official banner, as long as it says I am a member of the club it's okay right?
And to answer the topic of the week: Not really, I went ahead and learn alot of the Japanese culture after seeing FLCL and Abenobashi ( I did a massive reserch, and that made me decide to go in Asian culture studies at University!), but I did learn a couple of new things with Azumanga Daioh.
Tsali
11-19-2004, 10:49 AM
I too was also really intersted in the Japanese culture before reading Azumanga Daioh. In fact, one of the main reasons I picked up the first volume of the manga was because I figured it'd be one big spoof of the culture (like Excel Saga). But, yeah, it was really nice to learn lots more about Japan from these hilarious girls. It helped give me a much better understanding of Kansai (I was already aware of Kansai-ben and the like, but this really helped out) and the overall nature of Japenese school society. So I really got into all the cultural references.
Just by-the-by for those who didn't know, the final DVD volume will be released on the 23rd of November. I can't wait to check it out, and I hope I get the time to early, since I'm so busy now (Senior thesis and all). I may have to wait till X-mas.

Oh i did something yesterday that was related to azumanga daioh thanks to yukari. shes actually helpful in an area. Heres the story. I was playign bastketball in gym yesterday and it was tied 3 to 4 us winning. then the person on the other team got the ball and had a clear path to the basket and was going to beat us by oen point so i though "what woudl yukari do" or wwyd and i ran as fats as i can and when the ball hit the floor i lightly kicked the ball foreward out of his line of dribbling. it went foreward about a foot and as it did i dove for the ball tripping the guy making him topple on top of me and slid across the floor about a foot. no one thought i did it on purpose because they would think, "why would he skin his legs a bit just to stop a b-ball games that dosn't count for anything. AND THERES MY STORY ^^. my kneecaps are still in a little pain but its worth it.

To answer the current topic, I was already interested in Japanese culture before I watched Azumanga Daioh, but the series does make you more interested since there are some pretty weird Japanese stuff like the New Year's dreams. They're pretty funny, but they have like this "This is defenitely something that only the Japanese can understand" vibe to it, which makes one wonder about the culture behind it.
Puns? Oh, of course; one of my favorite Azumanga Daioh jokes has one of the biggests wordplays in the series. It's the anime episode where Kagura, Tomo, and Osaka are all studying together for their English mid-terms, and all of a sudden, Osaka asks whether Bruce Lee's (or Blue Three as she believes is pronounced) last name is Bruce or Lee. Anyway, after Tomo clears that up, Osaka then asks whatever happened to "Blue One" and "Blue Two", and also that if "Blue Three" was once the greatest martial artist in the world, shouldn't Jackie Chan be "Blue Five". And Kagura and Tomo are just blown away by Osaka's deep analisis of "Blue Three's" name. It sounds kinda' dumb, I know, but it's so darn funny and inventive. You gotta' love Tomo, Kagura, and Osaka... Here's to the numbnuts!

I saw the final volume at Media Play today but couldn't pick it up. I was upset, but have to wait for X-Mas for it. Well perhaps I can pick it up when I return this faulty copy of Spiral. I really wanna see how the manga's ending translates to the anime. One thing I know though, I'll probably be bawling as much as when I finished the manga. So melancholy and bittersweet.
It'd be nice if the banner contest was extended so that there'd be more participation. Hopefully it doesn't drag on too long though. Isn't it time for a new topic also? I'm not sure because I've lost all sense of time, but it'd be great to have more discussion here.

lol that was funny as hell. But I like Mr. Kimura in the sense that he's obsessed with school girls and sometimes loses track of reality because of this (Like the Sports Fest episode where he explains that girls should have their shirts tucked into their bloomers, then the guy asks "What about the guys?" and Kimura's like, "What? We're in the middle of class..."

Reply to topic: Kimura is, of course a pervert that we would all hate in real life, but in the wonderful world of anime, and in the wonderful world of Azumanga Daioh, he fits perfectly! His comments are sometimes downright freaky (like when he was asks for a drink of the pool water on which the girls had swum    ), but they're never disturbing, which is what makes him funny. He's a cool character, just not one I would imitate. :D
Ok, going kinda' off-topic here, I read in Anime Insider #17 that Kiyohiko Azuma is publishing his newest manga. It's called Yotsubato!. According to Anime Insider, this new manga "is very much in keeping with Kiyohiko's style; there's no sense of urgency and the manga's theme, as stated by the author, is simply to 'enjoy everything in life.' Expect the same crazy hijinks Kiyohiko built his reputation on in Azumanga Daioh-- you can expect an American license sometime soon, thanks to his previous effort's overwhelming popularity." I don't know about you, but I'm really exited to read his new work.
Also off-topic, I found some cool Osaka images around the net. My favorite is this one:

Kimura, oh man he's weird. In the manga I really liked him, found him hilarious. The way he comes off in the anime though downright disturbs me to no end. He's just too freaky. The scene at the pool early on, where he asks about Nyamo's "pipes" and then starts crying after getting kicked out, man it was not funny at all in the anime, I just sat there startled thinking "Oh my goodness these poor children have to be subjected to this..." He does have his moments though, and the interplay between him and Kaorin is hilarious, that poor, poor girl.
I love those banners, Kni\/es, especially the Kaorin one. That background for it is one of my favorite colors. The Yomi one is very nice too. Great use of color, nice and simple, but gets the job done. Choosing is gonna be very tough.
I hadn't heard about Kiyohiko's new manga, but now I'm really excited about it. I also wanna check out that one anime he worked on a while back (I forget the name). Can't wait to check out Yotsubato!
EDIT: Actually, after looking into it, I have seen something on Yotsubato! before, I just didn't know it's name or that it was Kiyohiko's new work. I also wanna check out Azumanga 2, to see what that's all about.

Azumanga 2 isn't an Azumanga Daioh sequal, so don't get your hopes up (I did :( ). It's really just a collection of shorts and stuff that Kiyohiko Azuma has done. Each volume comes with a CD-ROM that has wallpapers and stuff, but there's not much I know. I do know though, that the main character of Yotsubato! (The Chiyo-chan look-alike with green hair) came from one of these shorts.

Yeah, I thought the exact same thing when I first saw it. I really wanted to believe it was an Azumanga Daioh sequal with the girls in college or something. As for why it's called Azumanga 2, it appears Kiyohiko Azuma names most of his stuff Azumanga. He also did a collection of doujins based on Tenchi Muyo and Battle Athletes named Azumanga Recycle.
I'm really looking forward to Yotsubato! I'm sure it won't take too long for it to get licensed here, I'm sure any company would want to pick it up and ride the current generated by the massive phenomenon that Azumanga Daioh created. The only problem is, since it's published in monthly installments in Japan, I'm sure most companies will want to wait until it completes it's run to license it. Depending on how long it runs, it could be a looong wait  . I don't think we'll ever see Azumanga 2, but we can dream, right?

And I wonder why they name it Azumanga 2...:P
I guess it's because Azumanga is actually a contraction of Azuma's manga. So Azumanga literally means a manga made by Kiyohiko Azuma, which holds no relationship with Azumanga Daioh. In any case, Azumanga Daioh is actually a title composed of the contraction Azumanga and the name of the monthly complilation it ran in, Dengeki Daioh. There's a pun in that the word Daioh is also an expression used to address kings, which translates to the great. So, Azumanga Daioh's second meaning is the great Azumanga or the great manga of Azuma's.

Yes, that's pretty much what I gathered from Azumanga Daioh. When I first saw the series, I always wondered what Azumanga meant, but then I started to read the manga, and noticed that the author's name was Azuma. So I put two and two together and...voila. It probably didn't make much sense when I first saw the anime because anime obviously isn't manga. lol

In response to the topic at the top of page one, I find Kimura, to be a bit creepy, I mean I understand that he's excited to be surrounded by beautiful high school girls, but he takes it to some extremes, saying in class that he wants to be with Kaorin. Even though he's creepy he's still a solid character and is different change of pace from the other characters.

I think one of the creepiest moments with him was when he was teaching the girls how to put on their shorts, or was it tucking in their shirts underneath their shorts? Anyways that was funny and one of the most creepiest moments in Azumanga Daioh.

Some places in Japan do, I think it's supposed to give unrestriction while doing heavy atheletic activites involving running. Remember Japan is not as censored as over here. They truly have a more liberal attitude towards things, except studying which they are VERY strict about, seriously you need an exam to take another exam...of course the whole short shorts thing has seriously become a fetish, you can't see an anime portraying a gym without them...maybe Mr Kimura has the right idea...

Using my keen detective skills I was ableto procure for myself a small amount of Yotsubato! manga. Let me tell you, it is very hilarious, and very similar to Azumanga Daioh in story and theme. It's all about the misadventures of this little girl who is discovering all this new stuff for the first time since moving to a new town. Since she's young and innocent the way she approaches her surroundings really helps the theme of "enjoy everything in life". In the first chapter alone she learns about the fun (and danger) of a swingset, and also has an experience with a "stranger"
The supporting cast all recall some old Azumanga faces as well. Yotsuba's first new friend looks like a mix between Kagura and Tomo. This girl (named Fuuka) has two sisters, one that looks like a very young Yukari, while the other who looks like Nyamo with long blonde hair. There's also an artist named Miura who looks exactly like what would happen if Kaorin borrowed Chihiro's hairstyle. Yotsuba herself of course looks like a Chiyo-chan clone, but acts a lot like a young Osaka would.
Overall I'd say this is probably the best "feel good" manga since Azumanga Daioh itself, and would definitely be enjoyed by anyone who loved Azumanga Daioh.

Hey there, welcome to the club. I agree; Kimura is a very solid character, though very creepy. I think, my favorite Kimura moment is when, at the first cultural fest, Chiyo snaps a picture of Sakaki and their class's cat mascot, and they start to wonder who's in the cat suit, and then, all of a sudden the cat takes off the suit's head and out pops Mr. Kimura's head.   And then, Sakaki runs away saying: "It's not true!!" lol lol lol!!!

What I have is in fact a *ahem*scanlatedversion*ahem* that was pretty hard to come by (IRC only I think, took a few days to find the current 18 translated chapters). I too of course will purchase the licensed copies when I get the chance, in fact I may buy the original Japanese version at my next con in January. I wouldn't trust fan-translated stuff to anyone who wouldn't respect the work of the creator. Until it comes to the states (I give it a year, tops) it might be a little difficult to read it, unless you are a good a detective as I am, or you... <_< >_> know the right people. ^_^

Where did you find this? Is it a *cough*downloadable|and|translated*cough* version that you can get from the net? (I swear I'll buy it when it comes to America ^_^; )
Yeah, I searched on Google and it was like, the 4th result on the first page surprisingly enough. I've got all 18 translated chapters now. I've read 1-5 and it's sooo hilarious. Yotsuba reminds me so much of Osaka, but in Chiyo's body (but with kinda different hair). It's a great series tho, and I can't wait until we get it. I hope it becomes an anime, too.

Okay, sorry for the delay folks. In a bit, I'll be posting up the links to all the great banners 4 people have sent in. The voting will begin TOMORROW and continue until, hopefully, the next day, Sunday, which is the one month anniversary of our club (if voting goes well). Time sure does fly, doesn't it? Anyway, I'll edit this post when I have all the links organized.
*EDIT*
Sorry for all computers that might load a little slow...
Alrighty, here are the banners that were entered in the competition. Tomorrow I will have the poll set up for two days. gaming_otaku and I have decided that tomorrow, when the poll is set up, that when you vote, you have to post on the board that you voted, as to not cause confusion to who voted and who didn't. You don't have to say who you voted for, just post that you did indeed vote. :) So, without furthur ado...I shall break my own rules and double post (just once, really!) so the sigs will be seperate.

I voted, it was a very tough decision. I really liked them all for some reason or another. I finally decided to vote for Eternaty9's because they look the most "professional" and stylized. They were all pretty awesome though.
Also, maybe a little late for this, But about Yotsubato!, my favorite chapter has to be the 9th one, Yotsuba and Revenge. Everything she says and does in it is just hilarious. She can be mean on the level of Tomo sometimes, haha. My favorite part of that was what she did to the mom. Oh, good stuff.
I also would like it to be made into an anime. They could make each episode consist of two 12 minute long stories (like many American cartoons do) so that each chapter could consist of a segment. I think it'd translate well to an anime.

Everyone who votes MUST indicate that he or she has done so, though he or she is not obligated to announce for whom he or she has voted for.

We'll obviously have to make up a new topic of the week. Yeah, it's been sort of slow around here lately, but not to worry, we'll fix that! So I'll make up the topic. I'm not a very good topic-maker-upper, so bear with me; this is gaming_otaku's job, but I don't know where he's been lately, so until he gets back, you'll all have to deal with my mediocre topics. :P
We all know that Azumanga Daioh was first a manga, then made into an anime. Which one is better, in your opinion, and why?
Well, my answer is the manga, because of course, it's original, and nothing was changed because...it's the original :P There's also more classic moments in the manga that weren't shown in the anime. BUT, the anime is great also, just because we get to see the characters in motion.
AS for newer activities, I'm not quite sure about that yet. Since it's the holidays, I'd like to have some sort of holiday contest. Any opinions, ideas on this?
Tsali

I prefer the manga over the anime as well. The anime is really good, but the manga is simply amazing.
One of the reasons, I think, is the comic timing. Timing is probably the most important thing in comedy. In the manga, you control the timing yourself, with how long you take in a panel. In the anime the timing is controled for you. The Azumanga Daioh anime had great timing for the most part, but there's a few scenes that go on way to long. Example: The scene where Sakaki pets Mr. Tadakichi for like half a day. In the manga this was a quick four panels. You could read it in seconds, digest the joke, and get a good laugh. In the anime she pets this dog for what seems like forever. There's a few other really slow parts like that, such as when Kagura is introducing herself to Sakaki. They do a lot of Sakaki-themed episodes, and they all seem to be a little long with the jokes.
Also, the anime leaves out a few of my favorite parts from the manga. Possible SPOILERS for those who haven't seen or read very far: They left out the side story where Osaka and Chiyo-chan worked at the fast food place during the summer. They also took out the bit where Tomo accused Nyamo and Yukari of dressing like students to please their "clients" during the marathon. The also left out some of the earliest jokes from the manga, where it focused more on the girls in the classroom rather than outside, like when they had all the early competitions over grades. Tomo aced her Health or Gym exam, and Chiyo merely got a B. Then when Tomo did horribly on the Language exam, she threatened to beat Chiyo up for looking so pleased.
On the other hand though, the anime does have a few points over the manga. Seeing the characters in motion, as kyokyo mentioned, is very nice, and the girls come off very well. Some parts are much more funnier in the anime than the manga. For instance, in the manga Osaka's "come-from-behind home run" during the second culture fest got a few chuckles out of me. In the anime though, that part had me laughing so hard that I was driven to tears, and my sis came in the room to see if I was alright. The dialogue between Nyamo and Yukari throughout episode 3 is hilarious too. Plus there's episode 19, which is one of the most nicely profound moments in all of Azumanga Daioh.
Sheesh I talk a lot. Well, in conclusion, I do prefer the manga over the anime, but both are very well done and highly enjoyable. Azumanga Daioh is definetely one of my favorite stories ever.
Metalleaf

Manga over anime easily. First off as you two have said there are so many classic bits left out of the anime. Like Osaka's "Salmon Roe" joke when they go to Okinawa, etc. You can take your time with the manga as well, enjoy it at your own pace, the anime needs to be watched and you can't really take your time. There are no time restrictions with the book so its fun to read.
The anime's great too, just to see the characters brought to life.

Speaking of anime, I just got volume 5 of Azumanga Daioh and I'm just about to watch it. About time, I've been waiting forever to watch this one. Ooh, and it came with a Chiyo-dad pin! Haha...so awesome.
I agree with Tsali about how the anime sometimes takes forever to get through a scene. But I guess they were trying to add to the overall humor affect.
Shinobu, no need to worry about reading too much. The manga pretty much consists of 4 panel stories each, so it's really not that much reading, mostly dialogue between the characters that take up a line or two each, depending on the scene.

How about we have a character of the month or something (seeing how there aren't THAT many characters in Azumanga Daioh, we could make it a little longer), and focus all topics/activities on that one character for the duration of however long we decide? Activities meaning things like...fanart, fiction, and other stuff that focuses on that character.
I don't know how you guys would like it, but like I said, I'm just throwing things out when I think of em ;)

That could be a pretty cool idea, as long as we kept other discussions going like topics of the week and such, so it doesn't get boring to focus on a specific character. It'd be good if they were lesser mentioned characters too, like the teachers, Kaorin and Chihiro, and stuff like that, just to keep it fresh. Let's see, not counting extras, there are 17 "characters". 8 girls, 3 teachers, Kimura's Wife, 2 cats, 1 dog, Chiyo-dad, and Neko-coneko. That could keep us busy for a while.
Also, a little piece of news since it was brought up earlier. Yotsubato! HAS been licensed, by who else but ADV. We'll be seeing the first volume in June of 2005. Told ya it wouldn't even take a year. I'll definitely pick it up, it's awesome. We can probably count on ADV quickly picking up everything Kiyohiko Azuma ever writes after the success of Azumanga Daioh.

Sounds great. Since Tsali estimates there are 17 main and secondary characters, maybe we could give each character three weeks worth of discussion, so they'll fit into a single year.

Ah, gaming_otaku! Welcome back ^^
Just saying now, since it's the holidays, I'll postpone any changes until Sunday. Our first character will be...Chiyo-dad, since we've already started discussion about him. 3 weeks sounds just about right, so I'll start up a topic and small activity about the one and only Chiyo-dad! Maybe a fanart activity? Then we can post our Chiyo-dad fanart on a site for all of us to see. Chiyo-dad isn't that hard to draw, after all. :P

Maybe Chiyo dosen't have a dad at all. I mean, I'm pretty sure she can take care of herself that or she has servants that take care of her. Maybe Sakaki is actually meeting with the spirit of Chiyo's dad.

I think Chiyo-dad is not Chiyo's dad. That'd just be creepy. I think he is like some have said a spokesperson for the actual parents. We only ever see one parent and that is Kaorin's in the anime. So I think Chiyo-dad is a representation of all the parents in the manga/anime.

Or maybe Chiyo-dad is really Chiyo's dad and he appears to people as things they like; in Sakaki's case, a cat. :D
...
No?
Alright people. Let's see some ENERGY!

Hello fellow Azumanga Daioh lovers! Sorry I didn't update yesterday, I caught a cold and I didn't have access to the comp. -_-;
gaming_otaku started a new topic, so we'll let that one go for a couple more days. In the meantime, I'd like to begin my idea of a fanart contest for the one and only Chiyo-dad! I'll try to set up a site to show off all our wonderful fanart (hopefully many people will want to participate, as Chiyo-dad isn't that hard to draw). You can post your art on the board in LINK FORMAT only...please, to lessen the time for those 56k users.
C'mon, as I said, Chiyo-dad is NOT that hard to draw. Don't worry, I won't have you draw someone like Sakaki or Kagura when it's their turn, we'll just have to think of another activity.
Anyway! Thanks in advance if you participate! This isn't a contest, just a club activity, so nothing to lose at all. Look forward to seeing your art! I'll try to draw one myself and see how my horrible art skills can draw Chiyo-dad. :P

Happy Birthday, Samurai! Hope ya have a good time.
As for the topic, Chiyo-dad... creeps me out. He/It isn't Chiyo's dad but it's weird that all the characters collectively have experiences with him. My favorites are when he was talking to Osaka, and the "tomato" incident.
"Chi-yo, eat your to-ma-tos." One cool thing about Chiyo-dad is that he often finds himself in other anime/manga, like many other mascots have. Does anyone here read Love Hina? Well in one chapter, near the end I think, the characters go to a festival and one of them has a fan with Chiyo-dad on it. That flying cat sure gets around.
Man that got off-topic fast. About Chiyo-dad art, I could probably whip up something in Paint, but I assure it will suck nicely. I can barely create stick figures, and the last thing I "drew" (read: followed step-by-step instructions on a website) was an uneven face pick of Rei from Evangelion.
But, I'll give it a shot, see what I can do. I hope some real artists come up wit some nice stuff, too. Keep it active, guys.

8O Chiyo-dad in Love Hina? I missed that... then again, I read Azumanga Daioh after Love Hina, so... :D
Anyway, I think everyone is clear on this, but just to make sure: One of the club rules reads as follows: No put downs on the show or each other (flaming), and this rule applies also to club activities, such as the fanart exposition we're having of Chiyo-dad. So, no one should criticize (whether positively or negatively) someone else's art, without his or her consent. If you have an opinion, make it a positive one, and I don't mean positive criticizim. Sound Ok?
EDIT
OMG! I just read Yotsubato!, and God is it hillarious!! It's so different from Azumanga Daioh (in a good way). It has like so many social satirical comments and stuff, but it's presented in such an indifferent way, that it's just genius. LOLOLOLOLOL!!!!   What do you like most about Yotsubato! so far, Tsali?

Yea that could be possible. I think chiyo-dad is just a spokesperson for her real dad. since iun one episode she mentions how she wakes up her mom and dad for breakfast. shes also mentioned them a coupel other times i think.
Yeah, in the episode when Chiyo-chan needs an eraser and goes to the store, before she leaves she intends to ask her parents, but she says that they had both gone out for the day. But as she runs from streetlight to streetlight (in a very cute fashion, might I add) she meets up with Kagura. ^_^ All I know is it's on volume 4. Can't remember which ep tho... (Sorry for double posting!! X_X )

Happy Birthday to The Lone Samurai! Hope your day is going well.
I bought the final Azumanga dvd yesterday...finally, I have all of them! I love yamamaya :P
I think it's interesting how Chiyo-dad appears as Chiyo-chan's pillow a couple times when Sakaki thought up of him. She didn't even notice Osaka lying on a Chiyo-dad pillow 0o; He also seemed to appear more in the final dvd...randomly. I guess it's just the mystery that is Chiyo-dad.
Chiyo-chan does have parents, but they're never seen. So hey, it could be a possibility! :P

Happy New Year, everyone! Hope you all have a good one!
Let's see, I fiddled around with Paint and could probably finish up a Chiyo-dad picture in a few days when I can find some time. It'll be nothing special, I assure you. I half-wish I could've learnt to draw to further express myself. Ahh well, I have many other talents. Can't wait to see everyone's artwork!
gaming_otaku, you asked what I like best about Yotsubato!? Well, I think my favorite part is the way Yotsuba approaches everything around her. It reminds me of when I was a toddler, discovering everything for the first time. For instance, the Cicada story reminds me of when I would catch fireflies in the backyard with my dad, good nostalgic memories <Thoughtful Sigh>. The characters are also really fun too. I really like Miura, she looks a lot like Kaorin, and she's brutally honest with Yotsuba. The scene where she, Yotsuba and Ena are drawing the landscape is freakin' hilarious! I also like the dad, I'd like to be that type of dad when/if I have kids. My favorite specific moment so far is probably the "masacre" in chapter 9, especially what Yotsuba does to poor Ena, haha. So yeah, everything about Yotsubato! is great, what do you like most, otaku?
Till next time, Happy New Year, everyone!

I think Chiyo-dad is just a freaky representation of Chiyo's real father, but here's something interesting. In Japan, there are lucky cat figurines called Maneki-Neko, and a gold one is supposed to bring riches(and Chiyo's family is supposed to be very wealthy!). What if Chiyo-dad is the Mihama family's good luck spirit?
Not very possible, but interesting nonetheless....
