This thread I created for news that does affect everyone but is in no way really major but is still "worthy" enough to still be announced to the forum.
==============================
In the Introductions forum, there is a New A4 Maps (aka Where are you from) link.
This has replaced the old map, seeing as the old map kept deleting the oldest message after 100 posts.
Hopefully this new map won't. and if it doesn't ...well... *shrug* It looks cool. lol.
For those interested:
Go here (http://www.frappr.com/anime4um)
Ah well.
Thats the news.

Oops sorry.
the link to the A4 Map thread is
Here (http://www.anime-forums.com/viewtopic.php?t=6376)
Sorry about that ^^.
The direct link to the map itself is also located in the post above. Thanks!

huh. i was unaware of this. HA.
We'll just have both.
That ...other map is a bit more false. I'm trying to go for a more realistic feel to where people reside.
Example: Kyuu is not in Mexico. heh. Avi-chan and I got a laugh out of that one. But sadly its not true.

I did some "Winter Cleaning" of the forum. If you notice a slight drop in your post count, its probably due to the fact that I deleted all of the closed threads in the Bin of Doom.
Vampire_Lowell

"Spring Cleaning" will be happening this month.
What this means :
I will be cleaning up the forums by moving all closed threads into the Bin, and deleting any threads that have anywhere between 0-2 posts.
So if you notice your post count going down a bit - you can blame that one on me.

New news to announce. The Vampire *Points at admin in above post* has concocted events for next month that I'm sure people will enjoy. I'll allow him to announce that.
New forums will be created including a long awaited Claymore. I hope everyone posts in it and have fun doing so. Please continue to make suggestions in the Request Suggestions forum. Without them your favorite topics will never have their own forum.
We will be announcing a Good Member Award. Still working on the name obviously...but it's self explanatory. Awards will be given to members who contribute to the forum in a positive manner. Such awards are hard to give out because we have so many amazing members, but it's our way to express our appreciation for your continued support of our forum.
Oh and last but not least. Archiving. We will be attempting to archive older series specific forums in the near future. This will save space and allow us to create more series specific forums that reflect todays latest anime.

For some reason this set of announcements has gotten me oddly excited. >_>
I feel like I almost sense A4 reviving to former glory. It seems like there's been a noticeable lag in things over the past few months or so all over the place and it's about time things are brought back up to speed.

I'm pretty excited as well. There's alot going on for the first time in ages and people seem to be very motivated which is always a good thing.
The Archiving will greatly help the forums in many ways. The forum needs the facelift. ^^

THE VAMPIRE HAS ARRIVED.
But I'm only going to address the events of September by saying that this is in no way my doing. I'd like to thank DDR Demon who took, well, the initiative to come up with something that I'm surprised that no one else has. ...Or at least that I can remember.
September will be A4 Month in A4. This will probably start what will be a recurring event in my eyes.
This was something that the user's have done. The only thing I'm doing is bringing it to light to all of A4 'cuz I think its an awesome idea.
For those who have no idea whats been going on - well - lemme point you to a thread.
Title: Mark your A4 Septemeber calendar
http://www.anime-forums.com/showthread.php?t=71609
Read up on the first post. These events will take place on those days. You are free to take part on whatever events happen on that day. ...And you don't have to either.
Your choice. However, if you get a pm during one of those event days, well ;)... Just run with it.
The A4 Calendar will go into effect and will announce what day it is AND what is supposed to transpire on that day.
I hope you enjoy every day since I know I will.
I would like to thank the users on this. Kudos to A4. Can't wait for September.

Oh, and just to bring it to your attention, there have been some questions/comments further posted concerning things that would need an admin to answer in that thread before the whole calendar can be solidified (Mainly dealing with stickying a thread and with whether or not a certain day would be permissible).

No, he's going to contract the job to me, whereupon I will immediately and forthrightly subcontract said contract to a mexican programming company and make gobs of money.
In the end it will all consist of a few lines of javascript which makes a window pop up upon log on saying what day it is and that participation in said day is mandatory.

Misc (minor) Notes:
1. We've changed Anime Conventions forum to Conventions now. Any convention that happens, doesn't have to be anime related any longer, that you will be participating in or are interested in knowing about can be posted here. (E3 con could be in either Gaming or Conventions or both with a link to the same thread.)
2. Non-Anime Music has been changed to Music and Audio.
3. The Event forum has been made. I'm sure some of you might have seen this. This is for future events, contests, tournys - involving Anime-forums.com and its userbase. This can be used for
a. announcements of (future) events.
b. events themselves such as contests, tournaments.

Hello everyone.
Some updates on the forum aesthetics and or what's being shuffled around. First and foremost, the Archive (I know I know...it's like waiting for the next Duke Nukem game). A new Archive will be added to the forum soon with all of the forums that are no longer on the index page.
Anime Classics is now subforumed in the Anime Chit Chat:
There are also several Classic Forums available there including: Dragonball, Evangelion, Slayers, Sailor Moon, Trigun, Ranma 1/2 and Yu Yu Hakusho.
This area is for active forums that are considered Classic.

I don't really see the need to put the Avatar & Signature Request thread in it's own forum. It makes it seem that people can make their own "Sig Shops" (that was brought up before) in that part of the forum as well since that's kinda what it's now named. Unless that's allowed now?
But, in my opinion, I think it'd be fine if it was just stickied in the Visual Arts forum. ^^;

As of today, new members will no longer participate in the Fun and Games forum. After they've posted long enough to become veterans they'll have access.
The rules within the Extended Discussion, General Non Anime Discussion and the Weekly Web Dump will be enforced to keep things clear. Too many times the line has blurred which has had people post things in places they do not belong.
A Review forum is almost complete and is being worked on by Knuckles10. With it, you will be able to create reviews and add media to support those reviews.
That is all for now. Any additional news will be posted at a later time.

Fun & Games:
New members will need to gain access through one of two ways. Either be a member on the forum for 3 months or have made at least 500 posts.
User Reputation:
The reputation system has been activated. We'll see how this works out. We may end up using a Thanks System. At the very least we'll likely change the way it looks underneath the Users information.
Default reputation for new users is 10. Their reputation Power or Influence is 1. This means that everytime they give someone a positive reputation that users reputation goes up 1.
For now, you can add to a users reputation by clicking on this icon:
http://www.anime-forums.com/images/buttons/reputation.gif
Adding to a users reputation is encouraged for making beneficial/informative posts.
Reputation Power/Influence factors~~~~~
Registration Date Factor:
For every 365 days spent on the forum, users gain 1 point of reputation-altering power. So for every year, they gain 1 point of reputation power.
Post Count Factor:
For every 1000 posts, users gain 1 point of reputation-altering power. This is set to 1000. So you gain 1 point of influence for every 1000 posts. For example...WildStar has over 8k posts. That's 8 points of influence.
Reputation Point Factor:
For every 100 points of reputation, users gain 1 point of reputation-altering power.
Minimum Post Count: This is how many posts a user must have before his reputation hits count on others. It's set to 50. So they can add to someones reputation but it wont count until they've made 50 posts.
The reputation level is whats shown under your avatar and indicated in bars.

Personally, I like the anonymity. If I got a negative one, I wouldn't necessarily want to know who gave it to me or I might be more likely to go find one of their posts and vote it down out of spite, hypothetically of course.

The reputation scales can be a double edged sword however. I have seen the reputation thing be pretty cool for new people, or those wondering if anyone is actually listening to their posts. Or to just give kudos to a well made post.
I also have seen it become a petty war between people who just want to hurt someone. Also it can become a way to gang up on people.
For the most part, I am happy to see it tried out here. You all seem to have enough solid core members to not allow it to go wild and woolly. =D

Yes. If it doesn't work out we will drop it for a Thanks System. Since we had this already built into the forums VB code we decided to use it.
Also, I haven't done much yet but I will be moderating the reputations. People dishing out bad rep for no reason will have that negative rep not count. I'm also going to tweak it to make sure people can't give out too much reputation. But if it doesn't work, I wont hesitate in scrapping it.

It depends on what he was neg-repped for though. Neg rep is good on posts like:

I'm with Freedom here. It's just a popularity contest, and I see no use for it considering people feel as though it's okay to use it to put people down.
I find it hilarious when people do that though. Usually if it's after a dispute, it's easy to tell who's giving you neg rep out of nowhere.

It's only like that because you and other people think it is.
A lot of us, myself included, use it mostly to reward decent posts, and to "punish" people for stupid posts, like asking for dubbed anime in the Anime in Japan section (If you don't understand, you probably deserve the neg rep).
Reputation, whether linked to popularity or not, is like a game, and people like to win. It makes the competitive of us strive to get more reputation, usually by increasing post quality. Though, the underhanded and sad types tend to just abuse it.
So far though I think the reputation system is working fine.

A few of us have seen the power charts of the Reputation System and trust me on this when I say that there aren't that many users with power because in all seriousness, only about 10 of us can actually make you have a bad day with the Reputation System. One person in particular though, can completely ruin your day.

@the text I bolded: This actually happens a lot, and I find it quite sad. I reward good posts and neg rep posts that need to spruce back up to something somewhat agree-able or do-able. And so well... If it's a pointless post, it gets ~negatively rep'd~. :333

Because we'd get revenge scenarios. I know that MUCH more neg rep would be handed out if people knew who was handing them neg rep. It's not always obvious. I've stealth neg-repped many people.

Why do I have a green block, yet when you roll your cursor over it, it says I can only hope to improve?
Not sure, it says 'On a distinguished road' when I scroll over it. Which matches up correctly with the number of points you have. Might be some kind of bug, hopefully an admin checks out the thread and can confirm.

You're right, it does say that now. But yesterday, and every day since I've started paying attention to A4 again, it said "can only hope to improve." I guess someone else lobbed some points on. You can disregard this then. :cool2:

Reputation has ranks like our custom titles. Depending on your points, you'll get different results.

Hello Everyone! Several updates.
New accounts will not be able to post links on the forum until they have 10 posts or more. This was done in an attempt to keep spammers from posting offensive material as well as any links to garbage sites.
As you know we started using the Reputation System. While it hasn't been very popular I can say it hasn't had as much abuse as I thought it might from the offset. But, since we still need to see whether this will work in the long term we had Knuckles10 add a very important modification. As of now we have some Enhanced Reputation options (Thanks Bryce).
Changes:
Posts in open threads that are more than 30 days old can not recieve any reputation.
Posts in closed threads cannot recieve reputations.
Any user who abuses the system will have reputations turned off.
Reputations can not be used in these forums:
Fun & Games
Suggest Forum Improvements
Introductions
The suggestions forum is turned off for several reasons. Members shouldn't get a negative rep for putting out ideas that others think are bad. Or negative repped for disagreeing on ideas etc. What we might end up doing is only using the reputation system on anime related topics. This has yet to be discussed but the point of the system is for encouraging better anime related posts and topics.
This is all still new to the forum. If it doesn't work out we will go in a different direction. But even though I had my doubts, I think it looks promising.

Those seem like good ideas. That way a member who already got infracted and his thread closed won't receive additional bad input in the form of a wave of hatred.
The only anime related idea also looks good. This would be the easiest way from discerning members who actually discuss anime from those who just hang onto the bottom of the forum.
All good work, as always. However, the 30-days old idea would negatively affect stickied or important threads. Oh wait, is it 30 day old posts or 30 day old threads?

I also think those changes are spot on; the rep system is quite a good thing but letting people give out negative points wherever they like just because they are sulky about something spoils it.
Encouragement should be made to members who wish to dispute their negative reputation if needs be on such grounds if ever that was to occur outside these rep free zones!
Just to note- My rep system has not been fixed; I have not been able to give out any kind of rep points since it was started, I can receive them just not give them out. If anyone has any insight into why this happens and can fix it please do ^^ Cheers...
I like these changes.
I think the further away we go from reputation being used as punishment for disagreements the better and more fair the system will be. Because most of the bad rep I've received were people who gave me negative points on quality posts that simply disagreed with their opinion.
Which isn't right :?
Will these changes apply to reputation we've already received, or simply only apply to future posts?

I strongly disagree with this sentiment.
Also down with the changes, they seem fine.

So what are the Rep ranks?
Also, does giving out good rep benefit you as well?
I strongly disagree with this sentiment.
Because you're one of the ones who gave me those points? :?
If I weren't lazy I'd have taken them to someone to consider having them overturned, but... I'm lazy, and I use them to further my masochistic self-abuse whenever I start have a semblance of self-esteem.
And thanks for whoever gave me that negative rep on the other post.
Nice to see the system at work. I now have weaponry to cry myself to sleep at night

Unfortunately this only applies to future posts.

I'll make a post showing all of the rep ranks later tonight. As far as this being beneficial to you.....sure it is! This benefits you because it encourages more well thought out responses. hehe =p

you see i actually like these changes, since im not a big F&G goer nor do i really see any quality posts in there that do anything besides make me LOL.
I just dont get repped very often :p nd if i do its from ppl who cant really alter rep too much... but does it make me think out my responses more?? not a bit :p If its a good post i hope someone might rep it but during my typing frenzy i just dont care about rep or not.
good changes though... im a bit confused on the rep ranks an the 30 day post rule... does that mean you cannot rep a 30 day old post or a post in a 30 day old thread?? or you cant rep a 30 day old post in a 30 day old thread??

It means if a post is over 30 days old it can't be repped. The thread can be extremely old but the posts within them can be somewhat new depending on when the last post took place. ^^

New rules regarding username changes. Users will only be allowed to change their names betwen a 7 to 10 day period of time every 2 months.

Well I guess it makes sense for it's been a bit hectic lately with name changes and can be a bit silly if not controlled. Will this 7-10 day period be at the same time every 2 months i.e at the beginning of the month etc then?

What about the new members? I think they should have a limit as well. Only, their limit should mean for them to wait until they have 500 posts in order to get a user name change instead of automatically asking for one once they sign up (originally [W]'s idea, which sounds pretty good).

Wait. What?
Do you mean that every two months, there will be a 7-10 day period in which people will be allowed to change their names? Or something else?

My guess was the 1st through 7th/10th of every other month would be open for changes, then locked down until the month after next started? Is kinda confusingly worded.
