Okay my favorite book would have to be Black Like Me by John Howard Griffin. I first read this book years ago and I have really liked it ever since. It's a book about how society viewed different cultures during that time and what one man did to really see things from the eye of both races.
Here's a summary from amazon.com. I'm not good with summaries hehe.
From Publishers Weekly
Griffin's (The Devil Rides Outside) mid-century classic on race brilliantly withstands both the test of time and translation to audio format. Concerned by the lack of communication between the races and wondering what "adjustments and discriminations" he would face as a Negro in the Deep South, the late author, a journalist and self-described "specialist in race issues," left behind his privileged life as a Southern white man to step into the body of a stranger. In 1959, Griffin headed to New Orleans, darkened his skin and immersed himself in black society, then traveled to several states until he could no longer stand the racism, segregation and degrading living conditions. Griffin imparts the hopelessness and despair he felt while executing his social experiment, and professional narrator Childs renders this recounting even more immediate and emotional with his heartfelt delivery and skillful use of accents. The CD package includes an epilogue on social progress, written in 1976 by the author, making it suitable for both the classroom and for personal enlightenment.
This book is so incredible and I cried while reading it because of the way he was treated once his skin was darkened. There were so many ignorant people and all of them disgusted me. Not many people would go through something like that. He knew the only way you could feel the same as another is by walking a mile in their shoes.
I feel that others should read it, too.

I don't really have any favorite books considering I was more of a movie person, I am reading double-cross right now. It seems like it could be really good, and the last book I read was skeleton crew by stephan king.
It's awesome to see this become offical.

i don't have a single favorite, but the HP series is at the top of my list, followed by 'Along Came a Spider' By James Patterson.
After that, I can't say really. I've read at least 1,000 books in my 19 years living. I read nearly 300 within the last three years of elementary school.
I'm a BIG literature fan. I also happen to love writing too.

nice.. its nice to post again..
I didnt notice this till now ^^; Yay!

What is His Dark Materials about?
I didn't think that this club would be about manga, but someone listed Chobits as their favorite book so I'm guessing that you can list stuff as long as it's literature.
Kyuu: I think that this club is different because we're discussing different writing and that kind of stuff. Not sure if they're going to try to write anything as a group, but I think it's more of a discussion group.
Someone correct me if I'm wrong.

I heard of it, in church I saw a little of the little and we were laughing at it mainly because of the animals.

Oh the talking animals hehe. It does have a great story. I think that it's a classic. A very wonderful story about family, friendship, power, love, greed, and so much more.
I did not know until a little while ago, but C.S Lewis and Dr. Seuss were very good friends. I think that they attended church together.
Another good book by C.S Lewis is the Screw Tape Letters. That is very good. It's a book about an apprentice demon writing letters to his mentor and the mentor is telling him how to change the human's minds and turn them against God. It's really good.

She's got a point Kyuu, this isn't like the other club, but we don't just discuss books and authors. If you had signed up early, you would have seen that the purpose of this club was to lend each other support as WRITERS. Those of us here that write, joined to get our fics pre and beta-read and to discuss good techniques to make a story worth reading. Or at least that was Dan's(Immortal) intention.
I still do like discussing literature though, and I'm sorry I haven't read 'Enders Game'. Any of you read the sports stories by Matt Christopher?

I consider Manga Literature. Just literature with pictures
Immortal Warrior
11-17-2005, 05:37 AM
If there are words, it's literature. I think Kaiton just summed it all up nicely. Sure you can discuss books but it's mainly about writing. It's kinda loose but whatever. Manga counts but I'd like to keep the focus mainly on the WRITING part of it rather than pictures and stuff, so go easy on the manga.

I'm sorry to say that, as a writer, I am not much of a reader. I kind of like V.C. Andrews books, but sometimes she gets a little too wierd for my taste(and that's really saying something.) Anyone here read Flowers in the Attack? Yeah, THAT got wierd. Great story though. And Melody(also by V.C. Andrews). She falls for her cousin. There are so many family secrets, I loose track. And she sometimes pays a little too much attention to detail. I can't stand stories that dwell. So, I skip through that and the story gets better. So, don't get me wrong. I'm not dissing V.C. She's a great writer. ^^
So, mind if I ask a question? Which do you each prefer, writing poetry or writing stories?
I, for one, can go both ways. Lately, I've been more of a poet than a story teller, but I still write the occasional short story.

Woo! Sorry I haven't been able to give a congrats on the club opening. I'm just now getting to a computer after three weeks. The one at my mom's died and so until we get a new one, I have to wait for when I come to my dad's to post, so I might not be on from time to time. Sorry all. Anyway, to get back on track, congrats on becoming a official! ^_^
I have loads of books I read. I'm really in book series rather than just ONE book. My first and formost favorite series; The Harry Potter series. I can't help but love it. So much adventure, humor, and excitment. It just takes me away and I love it. I've become bery much addicted to it right now (I think it's because I saw the movie on Friday). I do also love the His Dark Materials series; The Golden Compass, The Subtle Knife, and The Amber Spyglass. GREAT series. I loved all three, and I found them at total random too! And of course, The Chronicles of Narnia are a given! I just love reading about fantasy...it inspires me a lot and just lets ideas flow 'n float throughout my head. It's lots of fun. ^_^

well I have these facts down
the main story revolves around mobsters, in a mobster/gangster city "the city" no perticular location.
A mobster story with brutal sword fights/martial art fights.
Conflicts of love and hate arouse
And our main character decideds to spend some of his last days alive due to a heart condition to take on one night of ruthless violence against all other mobsters of the city, something along those lines in gaining power and strength.
1930's style weapons/guns are used
(note this story has gone over tons of changes and I've decided not to put in cops)
now what I need help with are
*names
*the dialoug that's smart but natural and not forced
that's all, and it''ll help a bunch, thanks

It's a good premise, but it's not thought out enough. You need to create the profiles and personalities for the characters first, then you can ask for names. I know I'm not the best author here, but I do have almost 7 years of writing experience. The character development come first, and then the story falls into place. You need to come up with profiles for each character you want us to help with, then we can help you piece the story together.

I think it's always a good idea to make sure your characters are able to fall into place with the plot as well. Make sure each person is able to be in "character." Like it'd be wierd having someone like Gimli facing down Sauruman rather than Gandalf.

well umm, i'm a pretty big fan of Chuck Palahniuk. RIght now i'm reading Invisible Monsters, which is the only book of his that i haven't read, aside from a tourists guide of oregon. I remember reading more in elementary school then i do now in high school.
I'm a big fan of fiction writing. I'm currently working on three projects right now, Formula: Project Zero, Purpose, and a screenplay which i intend to send to several film companies when i am finished.
My style...is very eccentric. I basically alter the rules of grammar to my liking. I try to address the audience as much as possible, i try to eliminate that wall between the reader and author.
What i hate about most novels is the third person perspective. This is probably because i find it very slow and boring...with all the indepth descriptions and what not. I must also say that i detest fantasy novels, and the reason for that is unbeknownst to me.
Hmm hopefully people will read this and check out my stuff, and hopefully i'll find out some things to read also.

personalities ok
main character (male)- seeing how this man feels he doesn't have long to live he feels as if the world has ended already, and inside now he's preparing for something big. You know that feeling when you feel like you must do something worthwhile for some cause, same here. fearless but yet fearful of something inside, he knows he's strong but his strength isn't to what he imagines.
second main character (female)- this character is more of the main character's side buddy, beucase this is a noir story it seems great to have a relationship between the two. So she is taken by the main character's thoughts that he will not live long. She is a strong woman with no patience for anything of an annoyance to her and at the same time she is also the damselle in destress or however you say that, the innocent girl. Caring, worried, and tough.
the head man/the don- this is the man at the top/the big boss guy that we have all seen in mobster films, this is the al capone of this story. A bit heavy, very relaxed, with a feeling like your not sure if you can trust him but you may have no choice. Calm and serious.
That's all really

NONONONONONONONONONONONONONONONONONONONONONONONONO ! You are just throwing out some hastily prepaired comments. I have a format that I often follow.
Name:Kaiden (kay-den)
Age: 18
Race: Human Greek
Gender:Male
Appearance
Height:6'3"
Weight: 150 lbs
Hair: Short brown slicked forward
Clothes
Ithalyen Armor:Bronze breastplate, brown leather bracers both arms, chainmail greaves, bronze shin guards, sandals
Street clothes: Blue sleevles tunic, brown tattered peasent pants
Personality:Kind, cheerful, resourceful, hopeful, compassionate
Background: A peasant of notable skill with a blade. He was accepted into the Ithalyen army. He is young, inexperienced and eager for battle. Yet when the time comes and the city is under attack from the Lord of the Underworld Hades, he isn't so sure he likes fighting.
Here is an example from one of my ancient works. This is my idea of a "profile" but it may vary depending on the writer. A few random comments isn't going to give you much direction though. And you can't just simply write out their precise role in the story, you have to show, not tell. Picture the third guy sitting in a tall skyscraper smoking a cuban cigar with a few "clients" or something.

Look, blackcrow, you're the one getting pissed. We're not trying to change your style. But that's just the way Dan and I work. We have to see how the character is built. The age matters, the style of dress matter, and it's all about the small things. You can't get mad a people that you want help from. If you asked, we're at least trying. You have to accept that not all authors can follow your ideas when you don't give detail.

I don't really find ispiration for a character. I usually just create one one the spot when needed. Most of my charaters usually develop as I write the story, but there are a few that I take the time to make a certain way, and they don't really change much as the story progresses.

first i think about what the story is going to be about... think of some of my favorite characters and see how they blends into the story... and then i start naming names in my head that will go along with tone of the story
Well I think this is a good opening for a topic discussion. New topic: What do you do when you are trying to make a character? Where do you find inspiration? Where? How? Why? All that stuff.
Fairly simple. I usually base most of my male characters off of me. Or some parts of me anyways. But I don't necessarily write about personal experiences. Female characters usually come from dream girls or certain personalities, things of that nature. Basic stuff. But on about half of my stuff, I like to use a character to be a symbol for something. Inspiration for both my stories and my poetry comes from a vast array of sources. Music, film, other writers, personal experience and beliefs, or something that I just think would make a cool poem or story. My writing's very abstract, more so the poetry, and it comes from all over the place. I usually write best at night, on my floor, listening to music. I also have a notebook of sorts which I jot down ideas or lines in, because I often think of something good right as I fall asleep, in the shower, or some other obscure time or place. Right now I have kind of toned down the story aspect, and have been focusing on poetry more.
As for the favorite book thing, mine's Catcher in the rye by Salinger. I just love all of his writing.
Jesus, I guess that's me as a writer.

Stories are something I think you have to stick with for a long time. Poetry I always find comes from a spur of the moment burst of inspiration. Stories are something I think you can get more immersed in but Poetry I think people can connect with, just because it gets more straight to the point than a story. Myself, I like stories better but I like poetry a bit too. It is either way really.

Hello,
Stories are much more preferrable for me since I've never been to good at poetry. Poetry is something the rings for some, and takes more spur of the moment for others. With a story you have more to write, hence you may be minimalistic in details, or full blown. Character development is a must for anything for me. Writing is just much more fun because you get to try and bring you imagination to life on a piece of paper with mere words. However poetry is not without its own abilities in charming us with its unique way of writing. For example...
To see a world in a grain of sand,
A heaven in a wild flower,
Hold infinity in the palm of your hand,
And eternity in an hour.
This one poem has always charmed me for its deep meaning in those few words. Author is known as William Blake. He loves to type a lot of...dark stuff if memory serves me. Fascinating fellow.
Biography (http://www.reference.com/browse/wiki/William_Blake)
^ Above is a link to a small article about this old poet.
Thats my 2 cents about my opinions on poetry, and stories.
Have a nice day.
Tetsu.

Ah!!! Sorry everyone! I've been so busy doing other stuff that I didn't come here for a while. ;-; I'm so ashamed.
But anyway, back on topic. XD
Yeah, my favorite books are by S.D. Perry and J.K. Rowling (Dan you should know that I do lol) S.D. Perry wrote the Resident Evil series. My favorite book out of that series is "Resident Evil: City of the Dead" because it has my favorite character {Leon S. Kennedy} in it. ^_^
And I love all of J.K. Rowling's Harry Potter works but my favorite out of the Harry Potter series is the Goblet of Fire, obviously. As you can probably tell by my avatar and signature, I'm a complete nut over Viktor Krum. Teehee. -^_^-
But yeah, it really doesn't seem we have a real topic here though. o_O Like Kaiton had asked quite a few posts before...any topic suggestions?

Check out this song I wrote and tell me if you like it or not, I think its real good:
“Broken Friendship”
It was my fault
For being me, showing my true side
My wrong doings in the past have caught up with me
My world is slowly going into chaos
There’s nothing I can do about it but cry
He is not the cause of it but is part of it
I can’t let go of it, I don’t want him out of my life
Go away, go away, and get out of my mind for good
I don’t need you anymore if you don’t need me
The first friend I made at that place
Was so nice and so in place
I feel for his laughter and silliness
Broken friendship which can’t be repaired
I have shed enough tears because of him
Isolated myself from telling him how I feel about this
Wished things were back to normal
Things happen for a reason
I don’t want you to talk to me anymore
Don’t want to see your face
Disappear from my sight
For now and forever
Friends have helped me pick up the pieces
Their advice so comforting and awakening
Helping me feel better was their job
Their job that they gladly did
I don’t think your evil for what you have done
I see you still as the same good friend
I think you have made a big mistake
Don’t come crying to me when times get rough
I won’t be their to pick up the pieces
I don’t trust anyone at the moment because of what happened
Losing someone so dear to me in my messed up life
I feel a sense of regret
Something special is growing inside of me
The first friend I made at that place
Was so nice and in so in place
I feel for his laughter and silliness
Broken friendship which can’t be repaired
I will rise up from this conflict
I will take back my life so dear to me
I’m not gonna hide the true me from anyone like I was planning
I need to feel this pain to help make me stronger
Stronger for what’s ahead of me
The first friend I made at that place
Is slowly drifting from my mind
What used to be isn’t anymore
I am really starting to get over him for good
My chains have broken
The seal of conflict is over
I can finally let my wings out
And become myself again
No more crying because of him
He is in the past and will stay in the past

I suck at writing, or actually never really have, so I might end up writing something, moreover I read, too much and almost literally everything. So to read some non published freelance work will be awesome.

Does anyone like this idea? Would you read(and post on) my thread when I make the story?
Ki-Hunt!/Energy Hunt!
In an alternate universe, special humans can use ki, the tapped power inside every human's body. Only the government is legally allowed to use ki, seeing as anyone else who uses it is seen as criminal and dangerous. A special unit has been created, known as the Ki Hunter Unit. The Ki Hunters spend their working lives capturing those who are illegally using ki. However, when one Ryoma Shizuna saves a beautiful young girl, Hotaru, from the Ki Hunters, he and the girl are both targeted as criminals by the government! Ryoma and Hotaru begin hiding out, and it will be very hard under the watchful eye of Detective Kamui of the Ki Hunters, a very persistant opponent who will literally do anything to rid himself of his rivals.
The series spans into a completely different direction once the archnemesis, the White King, is introduced, and the Ki Hunters and Ryoma must work together to bring him down!
CHARACTER SYNOPSIS: Part 1 and 2
SHIZUNA RYOMA
A rough and tumble outlaw, Ryoma is hotheaded, brash, and witty. He has a knack for bringing out the best and the worst in people, without even trying. He's a bit hardheaded and clueless, but Ryoma is a good friend and a strong fighter whenever he needs to be. His ki is a sword.
TANTEI KAMUI ~ DETECTIVE KAMUI
The cool and calculating Detective Kamui is a perfect rival for Ryoma. While Ryoma relies on instincts and 'guts' to win his fights, Kamui is all about strategic advantage and the physical and mental capabilities of the fighter. His ki is a gigantic scythe. While he doesn't realize it, he might just be Ryoma's biggest ally instead of his biggest enemy...
HOTARU
The sweet and innocent Hotaru just wants to live a normal life and not have to see any deaths or blood or war. Despite her unconfident and frail appearance, Hotaru is very intelligent and can solve even the most complicated of puzzles. She also plays a very deep role in this whole business...
TETSUO TENSUKE
Shy and reserved, this young man is a Ki Phantom, meaning he can copy the Ki of others and use it as his own. However, because he is a Ki Phantom, every time he uses Ki, his Life Force gets drained, and he gets a little bit closer to his death. How long will he last?
BANZA
The hotheaded Banza is infatuated with Hotaru, and will do whatever he has to to make her "his girl." This results in many comedic clashes between him and Ryoma. His ki is a gigantic spear.
JINJA
Cute and hyperactive, Jinja often seems younger then she really is. She met up with Ryoma's ragtag gang while they were on the run from the law, and ended up sticking with them after the General Raziel Blaze was defeated later. Her Ki is a huge lolipop shaped weapon that can prove oddly useful in some situations.

Personally I like Fantasy and Sci-Fi. I like the classic battle of good and evil with magicians blasting and swords clashing, all that stuff. And I love Star Wars and lasers and blasters and all that stuff with spaceships and fighters. I also like Romance though, just gives me a good feelings when the guy finally gets the girl. I'm trying to introduce a little horror and suspense into my writing as well so I'll have to read up on my Horror novels.
And to your story idea Jin, might as well make it Chi or something else because Ki just doesn't work for me. You could call it spirit energy or mana or Magika. Any of those work but it's up to you. I like the idea though, it's like pulling a wierd, dark twist on Star Wars with the Jedi. It's an interesting idea and I say run with it.
JinKaze

Spirit energy is a no. Too YYH-ish. Magika also sounds a bit too weird. Maybe I'll use that one.

What teenagers feel
Spoilt by love and angered by hate,
Held up by faith and pushed forward by fate,
Fooled by mirages and drouned up in tears,
Lost in the hopes and pushed round by the fears.
Everyone's laughing, everyone's wrong,
In your head singing the same calming song,
Fists clenching tight and eyes dont dare to blink,
You feel like you're hated, wont let yourself think.
Only trust friends and you're your only friend,
Praying to nothingness that its not the end,
Every word echoes and sounds like a threat,
Feels like there's so much you havent seen yet.
You think "God why me, struck by this endless curse?"
"Im right and they're wrong!" is your favourite verse,
You think they dont know all the things you have seen,
But that's what it feels like beeing a teen...

You said my story/main character sounded cliche, so I asked what you guys would suggest to make it less cliche.
The plot isn't cliche at all, IMO, or at least not the big plot revealed in the end. Ki Hunt is supposed to be written like a Shounen action anime, and I think every anime fic I write comes out that way. I'll try my best to make the plot and characters as original as I can.

Spike and Goku.
Immortal Warrior
01-14-2006, 10:25 AM
Okay lets get one thing straight. Goku is the most laid back person I've ever met if he's anything at all. It's just when he's in a fight that he gets hot. And yeah it is too cliche, the main character hotheaded. It's not bad when they have a friend who is and they always end up getting the main character into trouble but how many times have we seen that before? You need to give him a distinguishing characteristic, something other than being hot-headed. Been there, done that. And yes I do sorta' have a life (not really, after my girl and I broke up I've lost it) but I just haven't updated the member list and IF I SAY YOU ARE IN THE CLUB, YOU ARE IN THE F!CKING CLUB!!!! Well, after planning out the story, Ryoma isn't as hotheaded as I thought. He's smart and tactical, as well as underhanded(he's a criminal), and he's only slightly cocky.

After some time thinking about why many of the stories in the literary works section don't get any reviews i think i may have come to an answer. By some time i mean like thrity seconds, so this could be flawed.
Many of the stories that are heavily viewed are broken up into paragraph form, in which instead of chapter it's like Chapter 1. Part A. Which leads me to believe that alot of the people that go onto the literary works forum are far to lazy to read something with more then 500 words.
Does anyone want to comment on this, or suggest some way for our works to get more exposure?

Took a break... left the forums... rejoined... got inspired... back in the pen again... Thought I'd join (PM'll be popping over shortly Immortal Warrior)
Red Dragon: (^_^)
About a year ago I was reading a lot of fics here myself and I have to say I noticed the same thing. It's hard to find a story that can keep you hooked for very long... Whether this is a matter of quality (ie. writer's problem) or a matter of attention span (ie. reader's problem) is hard to say.
My idea is that those writers who are coming up with grand tales are the ones interested in those same long tales. But as they're too wrapped up in their own work they don't take the time to read the work of others... I know this is my problem. The moment I started reading some fics again I instantly stopped writing... I simply couldn't carry on anymore.
A year and a half ago, I held on to my long chapters despite this trend. But this time around I've decided to split some stuff up. My current work is more of an in between project as well (though it'll come out at some eighty pages or something in the end, as usual), so I haven't really taken the time to put in some barriers and split it up into actual chapters. I've caught some more intial readers than normal, but they all seemed to have dropped off after two semi-chapters anyway...
ps. If you think that olde banner of mine is a problem I'll remove it... I'm kind of a nostalgic kind of guy and really haven't been putting forth any effort in finding something new for my sig anyway... ^_^'
Tyler Durden
01-18-2006, 08:08 AM
I don't really agree with the whole "if i read others peoples works i can't write my own" theory, but w/e. I seemed to have brought back your story from the dead, and i will say this.
You've got skillz son, despite my distaste for fantasy.
Vortigar
01-19-2006, 04:26 PM
Son...? -_-'
And thanks... (I wasn't saying I don't appreciate readers or anything. It's just that with every story I've written I get quite a few readers at first, but once we're at chapter #5 or so the list tends to get quite, quite small.)
"if I read others peoples works I can't write my own"
Well, of course everything comes in more tastes than vanilla, but isn't it so that most people who are currently writing a tale are just checking that on the forums, and not taking the time to read somebody else's work?
Once more, I'm walking on precarious grounds I notice...
Maybe it's just my problem though. I often tend to over-overthink things.
On another note:
Is it fantasy in general... Or just the purist Tolkien-esque matter that gets to you?
Immortal Warrior
01-20-2006, 02:31 AM
As for readers losing interest later on, that's a definitely. The first fic I ever wrote was 13 chapters and I still had some faithful readers until it was discontinued and the second of my works made it all the way to 21 chapters though the 21st was never finished either. I've always had some readers but my numbers as well as inspiration have been declining. Something isn't the way it used to be, the way I could write for hours at a time and come out with something I could be proud of, maybe it's just the story, maybe I'm not as inspired as I was, maybe I've just lost my creative touch. I'm a better writer now but I like the writer I used to be more. Maybe someday that feeling will return.
Tyler Durden
01-20-2006, 03:11 AM
Just in general, i can't really commit myself to a story that has an estranged setting. Also, i noticed that most fantasy stories involve a 3rd person narrative, and i tend to find those pretty tedious.
Immortal Warrior
01-20-2006, 04:46 AM
Oh I believe it's just the opposite, I find writing in first person annoying, having to replace he with I and all that. Maybe it's just because I have always written third person I'm just so used to that.
Tyler Durden
01-20-2006, 07:54 AM
Yeah, same thing with me and first person. I just feel that writing in the third is so impersonal, like you're looking through a telescope. While using a 1st person might not get you the bets view of the action, but what you are seeing you see clearer then anything through a telescope.
Lord Darkton

I use the first person view in my latest work, Murderer, Killer, Demon. It's my first time using it and I'm quite satisfied with the results. I highly suggest that everyone her check it out at least once. It's graphic and that's why the title says (Mature Readers Only...) But you have to check it out. Just follow the link in my signature to get there easily. Btw, yes the guy in my signature is the guy from the story in a later scene that I haven't gotten to yet. And my avatar is Julie. I based her appearance off that picture. So just look at that avatar and you'll get a better picture of what Julie looks like.
Tyler Durden
01-20-2006, 10:12 AM
from what i've read dude, it's not really that graphic...graphic would be something like...a book like Haunted.
Vortigar
01-21-2006, 01:35 AM
I'll be checking that link shortly...
I end up writing in first person view a lot of the time by default. It makes it a lot easier to put in a character's point of view on things. Difficulties come when trying to get a grip on the story, sometimes forcing explanatory conversations about things one'd probably would have preffered to tell through a scene...
Third person is more static so to say. It has a more official feel to it I tend to think. It allows for better descriptions though, peering around the corner of a person's actual knowledge. Building up tension by describing a situation where two events are going to collide soon is a lot easier as well. It can become a tad repetitive and dry at times though.
It really depends on the tale you want to tell in the end. I usually deal with a lot of characters and do have a few picked out as main characters, but too many things are usually happening at once to 'bind' myself to one exact person... I did a pure first person once though, and a switching first person, and currently a switching first/third-present/past tense... (or something ^_^ )
Tyler Durden
01-22-2006, 01:32 AM
I think that 1st person is used in more, realistic stories. And 3rd is used for more fantasy and sci fi'ish tales
Happy Gir

I like to switch back and forth between first and third. One story one way another story the other.
Immortal Warrior
01-22-2006, 01:40 PM
I agree that third person is mostly used in Fantasy, and for good reason. In most fantasy stories, the main character is taken from humble beginnings and thrown into a new world where much needs to be explained and such things cannot be or are very difficult to explain in first person as the narrator is learning them for the first time and sometimes may not understand such things themself. I am writing first person in my latest work, Project Darkhorse but I am stepping off the path of Fantasy into modern psychological thrillers, into the mind of Brian Urban, an ex-CIA agent. Check it out.

Tyler:
So, you're saying you think your post is realistic then? ^_^
I've just taken a peek through my 'library' and have to disagree though. It depends on the scale of the events one wants to describe. If you can thread a tale together through one person alone, by all means use him as first person. A lot of times this simply isn't possible though, or practical.
In general most books are written in third person. First person comes into play when you want to capture a person's impressions and thoughts about things.
Poe's horror works are almost all in first person, so is Dante's Hell. Dostoevsky's Crime And Punishment and Tolstoi's Anna Karenina are third person on the other hand. (And yes, I've taken an interest in russian Literature.)
And to include Immortal Warrior's post in this as well. I think its best to turn your first sentence around and say "In fantasy the third person is mostly used". For that is definately true...

My mistake. And in response to your first paragraph, it does depend on the situation and the events you are trying to describe. For instance a system of magic that is wholy new to the character won't be very well described if the narrator doesn't know a damn thing about it, however, sometimes first person can be a more effective way to get an emotional point across, I must agree, but that can also be done using physical expressions such as clenched fists, gritting teeth, but in the end it all depends on the writers personal opinions and styles.

I dunno, writing is just what I do. I don't know what else I'd do if I didn't write, and it's a way for me to really express myself, something to put my emotions into. I write about anything I want, fantasy, a hero with a blazing sword standing atop a hill with battles raging around him as he singles out his next target and the wicked awesome battle that ensues. I think most people write about their own personal fantasies and interests. I know I do.

What makes me write? Hm, that's an interesting question. I suppose I write because I have so many ideas to put down on paper. I write to tell a great story and share it with people. I guess I also write to express myself, as IW said.
I usually write stories that are like Shounen anime(or anime for teenage boys).

I write because that's the only way that i might be able to make a difference in the world, with my books. So i write about what i believe in, which is freedom and equality. So my characters generally share my point of view, but are not like me in any other ways.
I generally write realistic fiction involving social injustices among races and classes.

At the moment I'm having trouble writing anything. I use to write all the time and now I can barely get a page out. At first I thought it was just a small thing, but now it's starting to drive me crazy.
When I did write I liked to write nice fiction novels. Most of the time it was stuff about high school life or something from my warped imagination. Last thing I started was about a bunny. It was called Foo Foo The Killer Bunny  I've posted it on another forum, but it isn't on A4.

I've been having the nastiest writers block for the last two months but I think I could be on the verge of a breakthrough. Ofcourse that block might be attributed to the fact that I had a life for awhile (having a girlfriend is too damn distracting!) but then I realized I'm not that kind of person so now I've got no life again and I'm back into my writing thing. Oooookaaaay, there's a sentence that won't come up often...
(Though I have heard it before.)
Back to the thread.
I've been trying to figure out for the longest time why I would write. The obvious first answer that comes to my mind is: "because I can". I can't even begin to imagine how different I would be if I hadn't had a constant stream of weird people, events, images and ideas walking through my head. I'm known for asking people questions like: "don't you ever think, wow, that'd make a cool movie?" And whenever I get the answer back that they really wouldn't know and could never come up with something like that I kinda feel as if I was chosen for this kind of work because I do have a brain that works in such a way... Ergo scriptum hic... Gosh I'd love to speak latin, but that phrase is as wrong as anything ^_^
On a second note. I started jotting down a tale one day and had some friends read a bit. They said it was pretty good, so I went on. And slowly that impulse started to grow into something that I wanted to define myself with. I always feel inadequate you see (I've got a massively negative self-image) and I need things with which I can prove myself. And since people keep saying I can actually write something that's actually good I tend to think: "why not then? At least I can do something right."
It's the same thing with singing really. Ever since a number of people remarked I had a good voice I've been singing. Heck, it's the same thing with acting...
*Vorty raises eyebrow*
Gosh, this post got personal...
What I write about is dictated by whim. I never sit still, mentally, and so stray between a lot of ideas before picking something to settle on. I have immense problems with reality though, mainly because I despise my life and almost all of society. So I always end up in straight fantasy or sci-fi, though I have written some surreal stuff.
Immortal Warrior
01-31-2006, 05:12 AM
I think Vortigar brings up a great point about having problems with reality and things in our own lives that we dislike, and I think writing is a way that we can temporarily escape from our ordinary, mundane and sometimes downright boring lives into a whole new world entirely our own.
Tyler Durden
01-31-2006, 07:12 AM
Yeah i would say that i write because i see things that are wrong(or that i see as wrong) and think that i need a way to express my anguish towards such things. But i don't really write as an escape from reality because i have nothing to run from, i don't have anything that lurks deep down in my psyche. I just write because it's something that i'm naturally good at, or that i think i'm good at.

Escapism (ooh, a dreaded -ism...) isn't really what I'd call my own behaviour as well. Though, in a way, its the basis that drives any writer of fiction. To actively seek an escape from reality is something different though, something usually associated with things like emo and suicide. I've had lil' periods of heavy depression though, I've gotten over that by the way, under the motto: "I'll just have to accept that life sucks."
But when I said I was having massive problems with reality I was talking about writing tales set in a 'real' world. About a guy who gets mixed up with his family and is forced to live on the streets or something for example. I really can't bring myself to write something that 'mundane' (as I see it in my mind). Depicting how 'normal' people interact with one another, or in other words, writing episodes of a soap opera is not something I feel compatible with. Something like Pretender or Nowhere Man on the other hand. That's more my 'thang'.
Of course I've also got a few gripes with society as a whole, but I think if I was content with life I wouldn't be having these journeys in my head culminating into tales and poems at all. One doesn't start imagining about what could be or what might have been or what should be if he thinks the current world is enough. I suppose this is kind of a self-defeating statement when considering writers who use the often iterated moral of "enjoy life while it lasts because it is great". But I think those guys themselves usually aren't too happy with themselves either else they wouldn't be writing such things. So yeah, I think Immortal Warrior is quite right, though not in a direct manner as 'some' may have interpreted.

No, Shonen is like an action anime. Basically like an action/adventure story such as Yu Yu Hakusho, Bleach, or Naruto(some mainstream anime that are of this genre).
Ever heard the term Shoujo? Shoujo and Shounen are terms that define the cluster of characters that drive the show or manga. Shounen anime/manga are driven by a male cast. Shoujo is driven by a female cast. Thus the ideas of Shounen-ai and shoujo-ai. Why do you think the full Sailor Moon title has Bishoujo in it?
-------------------------
I write to elude my lack of certain thins in my life. Such as romance. And shoujo-ai and the lack heart-pounding action filled battles for life and death. Same goes for magic. I do so well at it because that's how I feel about those topics. I write to understand my wants and to satisfy them as best I can.

I have to say I've never had that experience IW.
I must confess I'm not a big reader either but I try to pick up a few things here and there. Fill in some gaps (0 reply threads are so sad) and comment as much as I can, when all someone gets is: "It's great". A lot of time I don't find anything good to say though, don't like a story but am unable to point out tangible things to improve so I would like it... It's so hard dealing with people, since that's what it is in the end, you're not reviewing a story but trying to package it so that a person won't feel affronted.
Which brings me to another point, since you picked up writing as a hobby, do you read differently?
I find myself thinking "could I have written this?" a lot while I'm reading. And not only stories on the internet, but also published books... Comparing myself to authors. Sometimes this can drive me to a bit of despair but at other times it strengthens my resolve with a thought like: "If they can publish this, they could also pucblish me".
Immortal Warrior
02-07-2006, 05:06 AM
Well I compare all my work to published stuff which is why I write and re-write so many times, and why I view my work as complete crap. There are so many ways I can make it better and I can always find something else I'd like to change. I may see it as crap but I like crap I guess. Like when I read Harry Potter, I compare my work to that; is my dialogue as good, is my story as exciting, how can I make my story flow like this? Things like that. When I'm reading it for the first time I don't but I'll go back and make mental notes when I read it the second time.

02-15-2006, 05:50 AM
Well fanfictions never worked for me because my theory is that you can't get that same spirit, the same idea that is behind a character when you are trying to take someone elses character or place. It just doesn't work. I have read some decent fanfics before but most of them, I must agree, are total crap. That and I like writing original work because even if people don't like it, it is something I can look at and say "Yeah, that's my work."
Vortigar
02-15-2006, 02:46 PM
Fanfics, which I've never read btw, should be approached only when you're already a big fan of the material. And then you'll have to be looking for the same characters in completely ridiculous situations. I think fanfics only work when you completely strangle any semblance of the original and just turn it into nonsense. Like you guys said, you're never going to be able to capture the original so you might as well do something absurd and make it funny. You're going to sound/be contrived anyway, so just throw all seriousness out the window.
And even then you, as reader, have got to get lucky and find somebody who focusses on the characters you liked in the first place...
Making finding a Nadesico fic pretty hard for me since I absolutely abhor Ruri, for example. Nadesico fics might just be the only ones I'll give a shot if I come across one at the right time.
Still, I've been tempted to try my hand at it. But the plan we (me and Shudder/Yagharek) had a year or so ago was to make a fic based on Iria:Zeiram. Since that series is short and leaves a lot of things in the middle. We worked out a few possible storylines on what had happened to Gren before the entire series starts and during the first episode... In the end it never got started but I've got a nine chapter layout with plotpoints and everything on my laptop.
On the other hand I sometimes think that these guys are only writers anyway. A lot of characters have been written about by many different writers. Why not anime characters? Ah heck...
Path Of Wind
02-18-2006, 03:36 AM
I think you begin reading fanfics when you want something more from an anime or manga and you know that you've taken all you can get from the original material. I, myself find fanfics to be quite fun to read, you can always find good quality.

Loads of writers abhor <language>teachers because they seperate books into 'literature' and 'the rest'. I've read a couple of rants on this by published authors. I even managed to get one of the books containing such a rant on my highschool list (for Dutch). Then there's the next problem with teachers which is that they want to know everything about a book, little details, motifs, I-don't-know-what-you-call-it-structure-thingies, etc. which don't catch the eye when you read a book. I read every book on my list, and was one of the three to do so in my class. I ended up with one of the lowest grades. The highest grade for the book list questionaire thingy went to a guy who'd only picked up some excerpts at the library, since those are written by those 'literary knowledgable' people and thus contain what a 'literary knowledgeable' person should know... BS! It's a fact that teachers breed resentment among the young to read any books, which has developed into complete aliterate generations.
Now, with that off my back.
'Het Woeden Der Gehele Wereld' (lit.: The raging of the entire earth) by 'Maarten 't Hart' was my favorite book. It's about a kid who's adopted father gets shot when he's young and he gets blamed for it. He's released due to too little evidence and tries to find the real killer as well as his real parents (it doesn't take long for him to find out he was deliberately left behind in WW2 with other people because he's a Jew), in the mean time he grows up and has to deal with the common issues as well. The book doesn't focus as much on the murder as you'd think btw.
'De Tweeling' (the twins) by 'Tessa de Loo' was also very good. The movie adaptation was nominated for an Oscar as well, I can't remember if it won strangely enough, I thought it did. About a pair of Jewish (female) twins getting separated at age 12 during WW2 and finding each other in a spa when they're somewhere in their 80's.
The second world war is very important in Dutch literature btw. As one of the first countries that fell and one of the last to get liberated, we had to withstand one winter more than any other country in Europe (its called the hungerwinter, forced to eat turnips and stuff, thousands upon thousands died because Market Garden failed, making the movie 'a bridge too far' a very personal issue here), it had more of an impact on us than any other Western European country.
The writers a few generations ago, who wrote the modern masterpieces of this day, almost all grew up drenched in tales or sometimes experiences of WW2. With the collaboraters, rebels, starving families and razzias there's a lot of material right there. Of course the fact that our people are part of the Aric race doesn't help in this, and Albert Speer, the signature Nazi architect and big friend of Adolf. The Germans tried to indoctrinate our country into their ways as well, and this has left an impression (there was a Dutch SS, Hitler Jugend, Nazi Party, you name it, we had it too). To this day many people distrust Germans in our country, especially among the older generations. And even among the young this enmity seems to have taken hold (well, I know a few at least). We've also got some seriously extreme neo-nazi's running around, still declaiming that we're Arians. At the end of the war the Nazi men were killed and the women were shaven bald and paraded around the streets, many, both men and women, were also defiled, it was nasty business mopping up at the end of the war.
Sorry, raving again, ain't I?
As for stuff on my English list... We had a teacher that didn't let us choose our own books (and was a chain smoking creep with those wrinkled up yellow nails, seriously gross). But I really enjoyed Macbeth.
Didn't read Mockingbird, nor Catcher in the Rye, nor Lord of the Flies. No, we got to read Huck Finn, that book's s***

But i am just would like to know what you all do to write a story. DO you look at a pic(s) and write a background for it? or just write down some thoughts and go form there?
For me i look at pics and a story comes to me and i write a stroy for the pic. It is the person who made the pic had the story in his mind and is letting me see it in thie art. And I leisten to music too. What i music i hear while i write makes the story too. It is a mix of looking at art and muisc that makes how i write.

After what seemed like to be a lifetime in the darkness I woke to find myself in a cave that was filled with water. There was no light but yet I could see just fine in the total dark. This made me think. Was I dead, alive or something else?

Well no crap we don't get any banners 9/10ths of our members joined then dissappeared. I've got a few potential banners under consideration from our newest member, Sammy.
I also have an announcement to make. I've been thinking about resigning from my post as the Founder and Manager of the Writers Guild. As my two co-managers are as inactive as I have been, I might be seeking a replacement. I've lost hope for myself but not for the guild. As long as there is a lost kid with a dream, there will be a need for the guild. I will find a replacement before I officially resign and I wanted to say, it was a pleasure running this for the short time that we were popular. It was fun while it lasted but I've forsaken the pen and I'm throwing in the towel. Goodbye my friends.
Wow, this is depressing. Most of the members went *poof* and now the manager is leaving. Sorry things didn't work out for you, IW.
Sammy, you seem to be a fine addition to this place. (Nice banners! )

You're in red. In light of recent events I'm still considering whether or not to resign, though it's probable. My decision will be made soon and if I should choose to leave, Sammy will be my replacement as Manager and Owner of The Writers Guild. And more banners are always welcome.

Most of the time, when I can't seem to carry on with a story, I go for a midnight walk through one of the many forests in the area. It helps clear things up in my mind, allowing me to start anew and continue with any stories that I'm typing. If the moon happens to be out, I find it all the better; the colors and tones of the forest seem to be more... alive. It really helps me.
I really like the banners that have allready been made, though I would have thought of something a bit more like a shakesperean libryary or something, of course, I can't draw so I have little right to say anything.
*Thinks* Of course, how rude of me, I didn't even introduce myself. I'm Nanaki, or Nan if you'd prefer. I've typed a few stories allready and if any of you would like to read them then you may all you need do is ask. I hope I can make some kind of contribution.

Ok thank you...
I suggest that you try to think about what you want and go to bed well thinking anout finding another story or even to add oon to the story. I have been doing that and it seems to help alot. Or you might want to wait a week to a month then try to start again. Brakes do help from what I have learned.
And I find going into a rpg helps out alot to jump start your mind into the writing mode again. :D
Also if you need any help with anything in this group let me know. I am almost always free to help out fellow internet friends

I come to help the land!
...And the people, of course.
When you've been stuck in a book as long as I have you learn all the tricks. Seeing as most of you have space/time to read and write heres mine suggestion; read over what you have- go back to where the charicters essence is at. This often helps me to see exactly where the story should be going, where I screwed up. the most immportant thing is to finish the story in the heart which it started, if you finish it just to finish then it looses something.
I have been stuck writting The Cruelty Of Gods for Jak, it's main charicter, for 7 years now. Damn where did it all go?

Is this what you've been reduced to? Giving up just before the last hurdle? Where do you think outcasts like us are going to commune when Summer rolls around? O=
It's been too long since I came back to these digitized walls, so why do I have to see this weakness when I first come in? You were never the one to give up, that was my job. I'm not going to stop you if resigning is what you truely want, but think about it before you become as bitter and miserable as I am now. ==b
New Topic: What do you do when you are out of steam? How do you regain your inspiration?
I honestly take a hiatus until I find that spark of imagination again. Life gets in the way sometimes, but you need to deal with it like everyone else, even if it's more overwhelming than you'd like to think. :|
And for those of you who're wondering what I'm doing here, yeah, hiya. I'm one of the older members of this forum, and I've been away for a long while (see PLD for a good reason why). A long time ago, I posted a story in the Literary Works forum, but became bitter and angry at the morons who refused to read it. So, I tore it down, and now here I am. I'm still broken and miserable, maybe even more so now, but if there's one thing I can't let happen, it's another writer give up without trying: That's you IW. ;D
If writing is a misunderstood gift then so be it. I don't really care anymore what people think of my writing, because frankly, I know I'm probably never going to meet anyone who can show me how to improve. Everyone is too intimidated when they see the scroll bar, and I'm not printing out 34 pages of text just so they don't have to stare at a computer screen. What, don't believe me? Check it out for yourself, and don't say I didn't warn you. (- -)

I wanted to wait longer for people to respond to the previous question but this one is chewing on my brain.
I understand why I write fantasy, all my creative urges may be satisfied there. But lately I've been writting Dark worlds, Sci Fi and Detective shorts.
So I wanted to Know what genre you all write and why you chose to write in this style?

i'd like to join! because i had nooo idea this was here. seriously. otherwise i would have been here months ago.so, to make up for my abscence, i'll catch up.
First topic; Favorite book and why.
Erm, i have many favourite books, well, rather, preferences, such as The Belgariad/Mallorean/Elenium/Tamuli and the HP series and Dan Brown and Alison Croggan (tree song series) and the Otogi tales and The wind on fire series and The noughts as crosses trilogy and the Abhorsen series and His dark materials...the list goes on! there's some cornelia funke, but she ruined theif lord with that ending.
Has anyone here ever read Enders game
if by Chris woodings then yes
New topic: What do you do when you are trying to make a character? Where do you find inspiration? Where? How? Why? All that stuff.
I will start by drawing them and developing their character from that. ^^
Topic:
When it comes to writing or reading, which is preferable, poetry or stories?
stories. i can read them, write them, understand them, but poems? nu-uh, sadly, school has twisted my view on them by making me write CELs (Critical Evaluations of Literature) on various poems, and after a while, they really begin to pee you off. Except Futility by Wilfred Owen, i rather like that one.
Which is your favorite genre to read or write and why?
Fantasy, hands down.
What makes you want to write, and what do you write about?
sometimes, i can write a whole story just because i wanted to use one simple phrase. I mean, i based a whole horror/mystery story on the sentence 'the silence was deafening'. o.O. other times, it's just because i've a strange idea that i'll manipulate into a story or vice versa. the most recent idea is because i want to write about a character who uses the 'royal we' and i reckon the character is going to be a cat who is oblivious to the fact that there's a nuclear war going on and kind of gets kablooied at the end (influenced somewhat by Enders game by Woodings) and i claim copyright and trademark to those ideas and sentences in the previous paragraph! :D
What do you think about writing a book that takes place in a world of your own creation? Tolkein wrote an entire history and pages upon pages of each individual culture and language of middle earth. What do you guys think? Any suggestions or just random thoughts?
Well, i'll do alot of sketching, and making notes in class and scribbles and i'll talk to people about it, and i'll make shorter stories using the characters just to get a good feel of their character and personalities...
What do you do when you are out of steam? How do you regain your inspiration?
i'm weird, i just need to rest to recharge, then i'm away again!!
pleaaaaaaaaaase let me join, and if so, i can help with banners too.

it is good. but the text is hard to read. I know it is hard to find a pic that is good to use as a banner and find a text that fits in the pic and getting the color right. but it is good maybe you can play with teh color of the text to make it i bit easyer to read.

ummm, i don't want to sound like an ass but how are we going to get more people to read the stories in the literary works section. I mean the banners are awesome and all but i see a bunch of huge problems with this Club and just the whole writing section altogether. I think that we should each try to pair up and have a sort of writer/editor thing. People would be paired up by writing style, and i guess general experience?

I've already answered this one Sammy!
In "odd things about me". Yes, I assign a voice to every one I read, based on personality, description and what sort of charicter they are. Your sort of an older sister. :? :? .
I also hate when the movie doesn't mesh with your personal reality.

Well the burst of activity is encouraging and the new banners are beautiful. Despite that and my instincts, I'm throwing in the towel. I'll be requesting this thread to be closed and a new thread to be opened by Sammy, who will take my position as Club Manager and owner. It's been a great pleasure running this and meeting you all and I hope some day I may return as a member if the fates would allow. I've lost my heart and my inspiration but not my will to carry on the spirit of writing. well when i read stories i tend to create voices for them, but that's only when i'm reading a book in the third person. When i write a book, which is always in the first person i tend to only have one voice since my storytelling is sort of like a guy telling a joke in a bar.
