I just finished reading JLA: Year One, written by Mark Waid and Brian Augustyn and drawn by Barry Kitson. Awesome, awesome limited series (12 issues). It's a widely distributed graphic novel now.
It chronicles the first year of the JLA (rather ironic lol). Primarily, it focuses on the founders of JLA: The Flash, Green Lantern, Black Canary, Martian Manhunter, and Aquaman. But other big DC characters like Superman, Batman, and The Green Arrow play small supporting roles.
Mark Waid has been one of my favorite writers for years, and this book only increased my admiration. Waid, in case you don't know, wrote the powerful Kingdom Come miniseries and took care of the X-Men during the big Onslaught crossover (he wrote the issue that revealed Prof. X to be Onslaught--or at least part of him).
