In your opinions I'd like to see what you think has made new grounds and advances in anime to move it to where it is today.

Uhh.... DBZ. All together, I think it has left it's mark. You can compare any anime to DBZ, but you cant compare DBZ to anything.
I think...

I don't know much about DBZ or Akira(Mainly because I really don't recall being too obsessed with them.) But I have to say saint saya(Is it even in the last 25 years? )was a bench mark for me to start liking animes and such.
Other than that is just really Haruhi.:p

all things said except for Weeabo seem to have formed a good opinion. I also think that as bad rep as fansubs have, they have helped bring unknown anime to the world.

I'd say the American distributors. Companies like ADV and Geneon are doing a great job getting a crap load of anime and bringing it to us, giving western viewers more access and choice than ever.

What the hell...do all of you have Down Syndrome or what? The question is not "What is your favorite anime from the last 25 years?" This thread focuses on an anime EVENT. Learn how to read, tards.
The anime event of the last 25 years is when Akira arrived on American shores. That's pretty much the main reason idiots like the ones in this thread have such readily available anime resources.

Agreed.
I bet Mr Otomo gets pussy thrown at him left and right in his home town.

lol, yeah, the single most groundbreaking event has been the increment in FPS in some fluid movies like Miyazaki's, and so on.

Fansubs.
Don't forget about Broadband and Bit Torrent. Distributing pirated anime and media has never been easier.

In my mind, I would go with 3 events
1. Bittorrent
2. The explosion of anime companies
3. When Spirited Away won an Oscar

I already mentioned Akira, and gave a link with details about why its release was a huge event. Did you consider that before you insulted everyones literacy?

Akira - Groundbreaking anime and story, this really was the 1st truly pristine anime work in my opinion.
DBZ - I guess it helped make anime more mainsteam in Japan and then later even more in the United States.
Neon Genesis Evangelion - Still widely considered by many to be the best anime ever produced. The visuals and story were definitely something new and its greatness has not been reproduced since it came out over 10 years ago.

I think one of the biggest if just for animation period how cg and 3d are in more and more animes today these past years in comparison to older animes.

1. Widespread internet
2. Cable TV
3. Digital animation (anime is now mass produced rather than a labor of love). However at the loss of individual artist style. I see more and more similar looking characters in post 2000 anime than in the pre 2000 era
4. Clear licensing rules, the Macross franchse licensing shambles will never be repeated.
5. Cheap digital media reproduction. VHS/Beta are bulky and expensive to transport and a PITA to fansub/distribute
6. Better dubbing talent used. They are very specialised now. You may not like them but in comparison to 80's dubs the VA talent is superior today.
7. The development of the real robot genre as opposed to the super-robot genre. Mechs as weapons (eg gundam/Macross) vs super robot genre of the 70's which had mechs as super hero types (Mazinger, getta Robo). THe super robot era is coming back into fashion with recent releases such as Vandread, Gravion but the real robot genre still dominates the market.
