I was thinking of all the anime and manga that contain fantasy and themes of the supernatural, not all explain where these things come from.

For instance some anime's such as Zombie Loan for example explain quite nicely the idea that zombie exist due to a contract made by the 'ferryman' but others just have powers and mythical beings in them that are not exaplined as well...

This is a chance to discuss which series' were the best at explaining the supernatural and which you found to be a poor attampt within the genre!

Most anime i seen have decent explanation of their supernatural. I have some examples, and IMO they were decent and fulfilling in giving the whole background for an anime at least. My list includes some that are typically horrible but since its on-going there is still hope.

Decent
Ghost Hunt
Mantantei Loki Ragnarök
Shikabane Hime
*Bleach

Thats all i could think of right now.

Ghost Hunt is an anime I actually liked because it's Opening and ending themes didn't have any words to it but just instrumental. As for the explanation of the supernatural it was also fairly clever and gets my thumbs up. I like a series that can question it's own theories and plot from time to time!

Bleach is another that has a clever way form the very beginning of explaining the supernatural with the help of it's characters. It's a lot to take in at first being forced to believe in all these 'other words' but by linking it to a character trait it becomes quite a comical way of doing it. This cross genre series isn't as good as the above but gets a thumbs up all the same :D

"Mushi-shi" has a simple yet brilliant explanation for everything: mushi did it!

Lost your hearing? There's probably a mushi in your ear that's eating sound before you can hear it. Forgetful? There might be a mushi living in your head that eats the memories you don't use often. Can't seem to get warm? You might have breathed in a mushi that's used to living high above the ground.

Watching Ginko deal with these peculiar animals is a real treat. He approaches these beings like an empathetic scientist.

I think the explanation in Tenchi Muyo is just great, it was like 'opps I released a alien pirate and her pet ship from their cave prison, now all the alien girls I can handle are winging their way towards me to try and capture her.'It takes a long while before it's ever explained where she came from in the first place ^^

Characters like Alice really do mess with my head and there are similar in the cross genre shonen/fantasy ones like Bleach. Ichigo can do everything and it's as if the word 'immune' comes up above his head if he is ever fatally wounded

The Studio Ghibli films had some weird explanations for things but they did seems to fit with the whole outlook of each film. For example Howl's Moving Castle explains Howl's condition by the use of a bond with a fire demon named Calcifer. I liked this plot very much and although the rest wasn't really explained as such- like the castle- it made the film a classic ^^

I think I put it best in my book when discussing the laws of anime physics:

Magic is real. Deal with it.
