For decades, Mothers Against Drunk driving has been a part of the advocacy scene for decades. The group works to lower drunk driving and alcohol-related accidents on the road. Debra Oberlin drinking



Debra Oberlin was the president of a MADD chapter in Florida for three years. There was terrible driving and swerving when Oberlin was driving, a law enforcement officer puller her over for this erratic driving behavior. There were 2 breathalyzer tests done to her. The blood alcohol content was .234 and .239 in these. Florida has a .08 blood alcohol limit. No comments on the arrest have been made by Oberlin.



MADD



The non-profit Mothers Against Drunk driving organization was started in 1980. The group utilizes a combination of advocacy, action and litigation to try to stop driving drunk and prevent underage drinking. The chapters of MADD are semi-independently operated. The overall organization receives money from a variety of sources, some of which is sent to local organizations. Local groups are also given leeway to raise their own money as they wish. In 1996, there was not enough funding to keep Debra Oberlin’s chapter of MADD running so it was closed.

It has not always been “safe” to donate to MADD. MADD was paying over half of income to salaries of employees between 1994 and 2009. A “D” nonprofit is what Mothers Against Drunk driving is considered by the American Institute of Philanthropy. This is because AIP doesn’t know if the accounting practices are really honest. Keeping talented employees on the job is really difficult. This is what Mothers Against Drunk driving talks about when denying these claims. One thing is for certain - former chapter President Oberlin will likely not be asked to re-join the organization.
