Clients 101 - Go to Hell!

Oh my God, I hate clients so damn much. Why hire a graphic designer if you are just goign to tell them how to do their job, refuse to understand logic, refuse to listen to how the design process works, refuse to work with the designer, only against her and a whole slew of other unproductive things. I am the designer and they hired me because I am a professional, right? I suppose you could say "why get annoyed, because at the end of the day, you get the same amount of money." BUT, I don't really want ****ty work attached to my name, especially when I know it's crap. Who's gonna get the blame? ME! If these people continue to drive my design work in the direction it's going, I'm firing the client. Screw them!

Even if these people do get a grip by some miracle, if they ever attempt to employ me again, I swear I am upping my hourly rate in the hopes that they ****ing don't. People like this who know everything are really not worth the hassle.

THIS!!!! http://theoatmeal.com/comics/design_hell

This describes where I am at right now. The client is exactly like the one described in the link. >.>

Something like that... or rather, they think I am their *****.

Or another type I ****ing hate are the ones who say "take this and this and see what you come up with, then we can talk." They don't want to hear about their own involvement in the process to come up with the best possible solution. AND No, we can't ****ing talk because if you expect me to spend time coming up with a solution that you may or may not use, you are still gonna pay me for that time.

See? Clients make me angry. They are like retarded children.

Then there are the opposite to this. The ones who trust the designer completely and don't contribute anything. "Oh you're the expert, you know what you're doing." BUT still need their input, like what is your target audience and what do you want people to percieve you as? Have I got the direction right for you before I start working on the visuals? UGH those ones are just as bad. They are the too nice client, they want to be your friend and they are always the hardest ones to get money out of lol.

are you working for a contract firm or freelancing?

more importantly do your customers have a creative director that you can talk to, or someone who understands how creative collaboration?

I'm freelancing atm because I am still working on my Master's. And lol, they rarely have creative anything, that's the problem. But yeah, I am bytching because this is the second really ****ing annoying client I got in the last few months. The first one was a pro bono project that I was working on for a charity oganisation and because that charity are run by a university, they pretty much made me crap all over a design that I had won an award for. They said it needed to follow their ****ty brand guidelines and weren't prepared to compromise when nothing they do themselves actually follow those guidelines. Ridiculous. I had designed it as a sub brand that would compliment the parent, rather than something totally seperate. They could have pulled me back before I worked that hard on it.

They are not all bad lol. Some people actually do listen and work with me, I just get really frustrated with these types.

My brother is also a graphic designer and does quite a bit of freelancing, and he has the same problem with clients. He is always telling me they want revisions done to their work, but they don't even describe what they want done in much detail and expect hundreds of revisions. It sounds like a lot of work from what he tells me depending who you're working for.

I have had the same problem designing a hotel website. After a while i said either go away and let me do this or find someone else (a bit unfair considering i was the only on he could afford). Sometimes i have taken note of all their changes and just reversed them when i put the site live.
