Just kill me now

Greetings loyal readers (I assume that there is a chance you have read my last post and that is close enough)

I am currently in what could only be described at a brightly coloured hell. Of course I am refering to high school.
Yesterday I was forced to sit through a total of 3 hours of speechs all pretty much identical to the last, and today there is another 3 hours planned.
You may say things like; "I don't remember school being that bad", or if your not someone who has selective memory or has compleatly blocked them out with psychosis, "How did they manage to make school more mind numbingly boring?"

To the former I say, shut up. But the latter will take a more in depth explination.

Well the class, as anyone who remembers school well enough, is english also known as the most useless subject and the only subject I can't drop. Well recently in class, we have been studying some dead war poet and analysing his poems (Because that will help later in life). Anyway as you could imagine this destroyed any appreciation I had for this guys poetry I may have ever had.
Now Many may wonder, "Oh god Isn't that enough?" or others may say that I'm being overdramatic, but those second people are stupid, or english teachers, it's interchangable.
But no, it wasn't enough for them to compleatly crush any kind of positive things I might take away from these poems, but then I have to write a seven minute speech on the topic of his poetry, but not the acctual poetry, but the "Techniques" that make it up. But seriously there is no way this guy really put these words together for the reasons they think. Like seriously, English teachers say that the guy who got his legs blown off is symbolism for suffering and disfiguration of the soldiers in world war 1. But that is obviously stupid, what proberbly acctually happened was the writer was sitting about writing his poetry about his experience of war, you know the adverage kind of thing, explosions, a hill, some nice trenches, foot rot. All those normal war things, then out of no where BOOM, some unlucky bloke gets his legs blown off from a random explosion. and the writer goes "Holy Sh*t, that guy got his f*cking legs blown off!" and then wrote it down.
It isn't symbolism, it's what acctually happened. English fanatics may argue the the fact that the man who's legs were blown off wasn't named means that it could happen to any one in war. I say that he simply didn't know who that dude was. "He" sounds allot better than "That guy whose name I never bothered to learn." also the second would make the writer look like a d*ck.

Well my pont is that writing a speech like that is crap, and to make it worse. I don't just have to write it, I have to present it and listen to the nearly identical speech of like 40 other people. Is it any wonder that I am not listening, that I'm writing this blog on how stupid these speeches are?
no not really, If I were expected to acctually listen then they sould find something to make me care.

If your reading this and think I'm just *****ing for the sake of *****ing about it, then yes, yes I am, and if you think that is a problem then why in the hell are you even reading my blog. If your looking for something with any real content, then read a book or something.

    considering WWI was soldiers dug into trenches waiting to be bombarded by artillery and chemical gas, i doubt that the writer was actually there or had pen and paper.

    you should write and present a paper on how stupid the entire project is.

    or keep *****ing about it in this blog because you can't stand up for what you believe in. either way, this is good stuff keep it up.

    Yeah vess. Because he can totally just write up a paper. What the **** can any student do about it besides *****? Actually, no please do it and have it recorded by a friend so we can watch.

    Most people just accep thte project and move on. The teacher isn't gonna change anything because you think it's stupid.

    make a proper complaint, question the significance of the material being taught.

    it's your education, after all. you live with the consequences. teachers just get paid.

    Vess, one guy questioning the national curriculum isn't going to do much, proper complaint or not. Quite a few teacher have agreed with me that speeches are a stupid format for an assessment, although few agree with me about the analysis of poetry.
    The point being is that, if it hasn't changed in the last however long it has been running like this, why would it change now on the opinion of a highschool student.

    the point isn't about changing the curriculum it's about getting out of doing work you'd otherwise suck at doing.

    If I hadn't graduated from high school and finished the HSC last month I'd have probably written this exact same post. I love writing, literature and English, but what the high school curriculum does to the subject is an abomination.

    I say be a smart-ass in your presentation. I ended up having a rant about the pointlessness of one speech in my actual HSC exam. Not only that, in my Extension 2 English journal I have a go at my teachers and markers and the Board of Studies itself amidst the actual 'work'. I have rants about the entire course in general mixed in there as well. My teachers told me to tear the pages out before submitting it. I lied and said I did and handed it in with all the *****iness intact!

    I'm not sure how the markers will react in the end of the day but I don't need a very high ATAR to get into my course at uni so it should all work out. So in short, fight the power!

    I think that these state wide tests also need to be nullified. Where for example, you have to pass some type of standard "state-wide" test to go to the next grade. I had that issue when I was in HS. I had to take a reading/literature exam in the tenth grade, failed it but since it goes by credits I still went to the next grade, took it again in the 11th grade, failed it again and than finally passed it in my 12th and final year. It's just too incredibly boring.

    Do what Vess said. Except....

    Go to the school board, and bring your parents. Piss them off with it and convince them to go with you, bring friends. Tell the board how wrong it is. Then have your parents call the school continuously, as well as other parents if possible. Then you go to the PTA.

    This can be done if executed properly in three days tops.

    Attack at all angles. Leave no room for them to retreat.

    This is your education.

    This reminds of the **** I hate, except its worse. I gotta do a senior project involving a 10-12 page essay about a certain topic and its mandatory for everyone if they want to graduate. What the ****.

    I'm pretty sure there is nothing I can do about that.

    Now I can't speak english and I am homeless. (jks) I hate english though.

    My point wasn't to say that you should reject high school literature class. So I'm sorry that I spurned others to write posts to egg you on.

    But you really don't know what's good for you. If you had a legitimate argument then it's totally fine to challenge the curriculum. But you don't. You don't get that literary analysis reinforces critical thinking and rhetoric. And that is actually very useful when you're out looking for a job, or just living your life.

    Meh.
