Lol 50 shades of Grey is messed up, real consensual BDSM is not. It's about trust and having a connection with your partner you can't get from vanilla sex. Though mainstream media only wants to depict the seemingly, or actually horrible side of it. BDSM isn't all whips and chains, there's a serious mental component to it, that a lot of people gloss over. Being a Dom/Domme requires a special mindset, and you can't just pick up a riding crop and start going for it if you don't know how to send your sub/bottom into the right frame of mind. To do that you have to know the person well, you have to be able to trigger that mental state, and for a submissive to open up to someone like that and allow themselves to be totally vulnerable, there has to be a real trust between the two (or more) people involved.

It's not abusive like so many people seem to think, provided the people involved are taking proper precautions: things like agreeing upon safe words, hard limits, having a back up plan in case something goes wrong (because things can), and providing after care, physical, and emotional.

Granted that kind of thing isn't for everyone, but saying it's f*cked up is going a bit far if you don't understand the subtext of whats happening. Generally most pornographic depictions of BDSM I have seen make a minimal effort to integrate these elements into their presentation, but that's just how porn is, it's not an accurate depiction of anything, it's just a nice little show and that's about all.
