Deliberating On Next Article

So, my last article went pretty well, I think. And given the responses I've received I've come up with a few ideas for the next one.

One of the first bits of feedback I got was that I should take a second look at One Piece since it's actually a good example of a shounen manga done right. Problem is, I already tried to do this and ended up dropping it after about 130 chapters. I was pretty bored by most of it, save for the exceptional Arlong Park arc (which made me bawl and was wonderful).

People have also been prodding me to tackle Bleach a bit more thoroughly since I make so many off-handed remarks about how incredibly horrible it is. Again, though, I dropped Bleach after Aizen was defeated so I'm not in the know about what's been going on outside of a few updates I get from Ian the Korean on occasion (Ichigo is a Quincy? Really?!). I could certainly talk about the book as I knew it, but picking it up again just to rant and rave about how awful it is seems like an enormous waste of time.

Finally, there's a whole bunch of ideas for another Naruto article. I rag on this book a lot, so I was thinking about writing something about the things Naruto does (did?) right. I used to love this series, truly I did, so I don't think it would be hard to come up with a list of stuff that I genuinely enjoy (enjoyed?) about it. My main idea is to write something highlighting the peaks of the book's greatness and contrasting it with the worst moments it's ever had. It could be fun to nerd out on it while also raging at it.

What do you guys think? I'd like to produce another article a bit sooner than I usually do but I have to narrow down my ideas. Some feedback would be great.

At least with One Piece you might end up liking it. Bleach just seems like a pile of **** to dredge through and not worth your time at all. One piece gets soooo much better after Arlong Park. The arcs that come after are all interesting, fun, and a ton of new characters and depth is added to the world.

Try to purge your thought of it being boring the last time you read it and try again, it's completely worth it.

One piece right now is just absolutely fantastic 10/10 manga so, I think it would be really worth it. Although you will go plenty of sleepless nights/days of reading just One Piece if you end up enjoying it so lol.

What tony said; that seems so illogical and I don't see why you would want to go through chapters of brain cancer reading manga, where with one piece in the same amount of time you would read bleach you could read the epicness that is one piece.

Besides people who like arlong park 100 percent will always like one piece. Arlong park is like the benchmark of whether people are gonna like it or not. Besides you're 20 chapters away from the good arcs.

As for the good things about naruto. I'd imagine it wouldn't go further than the chunin exams and or maybe the akatsuki.

Yeah, high points would be chunnin exam and intro/raise of Akatsuki. Shame they just ended up vilians of the week despite some fantastic battles (Sasonori sand duel and Shika versus Haiden were epic) and don't even get me started on the re-do no jutsu.

Naruto's main problem was/is lack of pay-offs after months (sometimes ****ing years) of build up. Thats when Kishi isn't trying to be edgy and cool by randomly killing off charcters just when they stopped being one dimensional. Neji anyone?

So glad I've dropped it until I start hating myself again.

A relatively positive Naruto article might not be too bad. You can go over what it did right and what you liked about it, while at the same time lamenting its wasted potential and hatin' on all of its many failings (or as many as you want to write about, because there's just so much).

I also can't say that I'd dislike seeing something dedicated to demonstrating just how terrible Bleach is, though. There's plenty of room left on the hate train.

    Here's what I'm thinking:

    1) Pick up One Piece again and give it another chance. Start at, say, chapter 100 since I've pretty much forgotten everything after Arlong Park and see if I can hit the point where it becomes as compelling as everyone tells me it is.

At this point I figure I could write an article solely about my struggle with the book up to this point. One Piece is interesting but its earliest stuff is a slog. If I hit a point where I'm really enjoying myself again it might give me some insight that I could use to talk about the book's weakpoints.

    2) Start working on an article about the strong points of Naruto as my next piece. This one will be a lot simpler and won't require any prep since I've already got strong opinions on the subject.

    3) Try to pick up Bleach again with the car wreck mentality and see where it takes me. I could start an article that explores just how strange Bleach is up to the point I've been and maybe even talk about how pointless it is even by its own standards. Could be an interesting bit of writing, and people have been wanting me tear Bleach apart ever since I point out those plot holes in Naruto way back when.

Write something about the parallels between Hollow Jesus (Ichigo), Raptor Jesus, and white American Jesus.

I know it's an older post, but One piece might be a nice example of that emotional punch I was talking about in the fate/zero thread. I loved the mood that fate/zero set early, but because the story was what it was, I really wound up unfulfilled in the end. There are so many ridiculously sad back stories in the One piece manga that wind up with some kind of emotional resolution that it works wonders. Although, I'll be damned if I don't find it a chore to read most chapters because of the kind of buildup it goes through. Not to mention there's so much on each page in terms of scene and dialogue.
