Top 5 Most Noticed Anime Cliches

Rate this Entry

The other day I was watching through a few of my favorite anime and found myself thinking "What the **** is with all these cliches?!" I went through my top favorite anime and kept finding so many anime cliches! I kept noticing it through almost every anime, sure its not bad not bad at all, in fact sometimes it adds comedy but once I saw it, it was all too noticeable for me. So I've put together the top 5 that I've noticed most.-

5: No Parents! (Or just one)
I've noticed most anime revolve around kids from about 10 to 18 years old and more than 50% of them don't have either parent being that they died before the anime took place, during, or later. True, it does add to the story, a high schooler living in a tent (Fruits Basket) would tug at anyone's heart strings and love the person who helped them, or its used as the reason he/she fights. But, if the don't have either parent, they only have one that's about 35% of anime children have only one parent. Examples are, Rin/Yukio Okumura They only had one parent til he died but it drove the story further. Ichigo Kurosaki His mother died when he was young but he still has his father, though it doesn't contribute much to the story. Hence my meaning it adds to the story but sometimes doesn't. Ciel Phantomhive he basically watched his parents die and now lives alone with 4 servants and a demon butler.

4: Child Heroes
Another definite cliche is when the fate of the world, another world or race lies in the hands of a 12 to 18 year old child. Like, Blue Exorcist, Rin Okumura is a 15 year old high schooler who (later in the series) is the key between earth and hell. Or perhaps in the Bleach movie, Fade To Black the earth is in threat of being destroyed by problems in the Soul Society have to be solved by Ichigo Kurosaki, a 15-17 year old kid (I'm not 100% on his age). Maka Albarn is 12-13 years of age and the fate of the world rests in whether she can defeat the kishin or not. These are only a few examples but so many more anime have the world needed to be saved by a child a very friggin strong child, that is.Click image for larger version.

3: Sitting Next To The Window
If you haven't noticed it yet you'll notice it now, if the anime takes place in a school in more than likely the main character will sit next to the window! And its almost always the second seat to the back on the left side of the room (Or right if its mirrored for copyright). You'd think being the MAIN character they would sit near the front and get in more trouble or maybe near the door and can run out quickly but no, ITS ALWAYS NEXT TO THE GODDAMN WINDOW! Not like its bad, not at all, but I cant watch a school related anime on any level without at some point looking for where the main character sits. Its always the guy to! Light Yagami- second seat to the back next to the window. Kyon- Second seat to the back next to the window! Now though this is a cliche there is a good reason behind it. By having the character in the corner, less background characters need to be drawn and the window gives them artist the option of showing the weather and good lighting techniques. But its always in the same corner! (Depends on the side of classroom your on front or back)Click image for larger version.

2:Boobs Are Airbags ._.
Where humans right? So we've all fallen or ran into someone and knocked them over right? And If you haven't then you know how to walk like a pro! So its not odd. But in anime its every freaking time almost every time a male character falls (and sometimes female) unintentionally not during something important they have about a 99% chance to fall into a female character with huge boobs to cushion their fall. I like to call this "Faceboob" cause their face is legitimately getting slammed into some girls boobs. Then there are the times when the character is falling or running intentionally to run into them. If you were to ask someone how they react when trying to fall most wold reply "Throw out my arm to stop my fall." But if they were to reply that they would throw their hands straight out to have a feel then that probably an anime character or a perv. But whether its on purpose or not it happens and the poor girl usually doesn't know how to react. Which leads into the next cliche-Click image for larger version.

1: Tsundere Girls
Many people know of the whiny girls that freak out over every thing and look like they are ready to bust out in tears. But the more popular girls that usually get a lot of hate and love are considered under the category of tsundere girls. These girls are in my opinion rather conflicting. Because most of the time they will give the male protagonist a hard time yet be interested in him. But they are conflicting because though they can be sweet and have moments when they blush and you just wanna cuddle them, but then most of the time you realize they are super *****y, and bossy. Connecting this to boobs being air bags is that almost every time at some point the male will fall into her boobs and immediately get punched for it. Characters along the line of Nami from Once Piece and Haruhi Suzumiya fall into this category, and Sakura from Naruto as well.Click image for larger version.

Now these cliches aren't bad on any level these are just some that I have noticed a lot of in anime. Agree? Disagree? What other cliches should be on this list?

Actually some of these sound like overused plot developments. I laughed at the "Boobs Are Airbags" part though. Very true in alot of anime
