I think you should hang in there my friend we all come across a teacher/lecturer we don't like eventually the important thing is you pay attention and try to learn whatevers being taught (although the teacher I hate can't teach a class to save his life and doesn't know what he's talking about most of the time -.-)

If the general concensus in your class is that the teacher is incompetent maybe you should report him or something, why exactly do you hate him? Is it like a personality clash or is he/she just a dick?

Hopefully your writing teacher can beat all of the 'alots' out of you. Two words, Gen. 'A lot' is TWO WORDS.

I hate this teacher because I find using Second Life as part of his teaching method a horrible idea. I am paying full price for this class so I would at least like a simple mass skype chat. I don't know what he's like, but I do know his reviews are nothing to write home about although they were generally better than the other peep.

On Ratemyprofessor the only good review looks like it was written by her in a condescending tone. The recent reviews are the worst.

All I can say is I won't miss much about community college other than the low prices.

Aside from unusually...let's just call them nerdy students, very, very few people go to ratemyprofessor with good things to say. Just like with most things, people who have a list of complaints want to be heard much more than people with a list of praises -- and much more than people that are neutral or don't care. The internet is full of vocal minorities.

The same as books, movies, tv shows, etc., don't let the opinions of others affect your own perceptions of something; if you like the professor or not should be based on your own experiences, not those of others. I've found teachers and professors that my peers have hated to be very fair and informative. Some people just have a problem with the strict rules or high expectations of some teachers, which I've never been bothered by, since I always just think about what I would expect from my students if I were in my professors' position. I'd be a terrible teacher, as I'd always demand near-perfection.

Yeah after a year now I have found ratemyprofessor to be highly unreliable. I've found that some of the professors I really enjoyed got negative reviews simply because they were "too difficult". Of course, you're not supposed to just take the numeric into account, but the comments as well and make a profile of the professor from the comments. And that's not reliable either. What it's reliable though is for generally atrocious teachers that you should avoid. They always come out to be pretty bad because everyone took the time to let their opinions known, but these professors aren't plentiful to begin with.

And then you have the really highly rated ones, who are generally very good teachers but slightly overrated because of their easiness or they laid backness. They tend to be the more social ones, who have a personality, but that doesn't mean they are necessarily great teachers.

You shouldn't expect much from your uni btw. Lots of professors from uni's teach in community colleges anyway so it's more or less the same.

A likable mediocre professor can be as effective, or more effective, as a good unlikable one, simply because they can be much more engaging, and get you more into the material. The last semester I went to I had a professor somewhat like that -- I wouldn't call him anything but a good professor, but it was his approachability and likability that made me get into the class more so than anything else. It was also a very small class, that shrunk further as the semester went on, so that played a part in it too, but he was the most engaging professor I had ever had. Despite not being terribly interested in the material (it was a lit course), he pulled me into things enough that I did as well as I possibly could have. I look forward to taking more classes with him in the future if I go back.

so what was his rating on rmp?

based on my observations psychology, sociology, philosophy, and justice professors tend to be more down to earth and engaging than say math professors. Lit is always a hit or miss for me. Psychology and sociology tends to have a lot of females as well. Prob cuz they are sensitive

Couldn't find any from my school, and there were only 6 ratings from his previous school, the University of New Mexico -- though those 6 did rate him at 4.9.
