    Default Drama/Slice of Life

Welcome to another Anime Genre Recommendations Thread!

The purpose of these threads is to creat a list of anime that fit a certain genre to make it easier for people to find anime that fit their tastes. The threads will be featured and rotated, most likely on a "when somebody remembers to do it" basis. For now, they will rotate and be created fairly rapidly to get a decent database started. Please keep in mind that if you have an anime to recommend in a past thread, you can do so at any time, even if it's not featured.

The definition for any given genre is left broad, but for each entry you make, please at a minimum specify the name of the anime, why it fits the genre, whether or not you liked it, and why. Although the requirements in these threads are less stringent than they are elsewhere in the review forum, spam rules and other A4 rules still apply. Please don't just drop the name of an anime and run, tell us a little bit about it on your way out. As always, if you're interested in telling us a little more about your opinion, you are free to write a review per the rules in the writing a view thread.

If you're going to ask for general recommendations, please do it here.Specific recommendations related to the genre at hand can be asked for in this thread.

If you have a suggestion for the next genre thread, please PM one of the review moderators, currently symph lizard and EmpressStephanie. We hope to eventually have several of these threads covering the major anime subdivisions.

    All the genre threads:

    Horror and Gothic

    Samurai, Ninja, Fighting

    Mecha, Sci-Fi

    Comedy

    Shoujo Romance Anime

    Stuff that Makes you Think

    Drama/Slice fo Life

The theme for this thread is Drama/Slice of Life. Mostly stuff that happens, or could happen, in the real world, where the emphasis is on people and places and serious things that serious people do. Maybe a little bit of supernatural or sci-fi-ness, but that's not the overall point.

    Request -
Fellow Honey & Clover fans out there, do you have any recommendations?

Maison Ikkoku - A soap opera aimed at adults. It's a good anime for adults that aren't familiar to get into as it deals situations that are uncomfortable to Americans in a gentle enough manner so as not to scare them off. EX: The student wanting to go out with the teacher is more common than most think in anime, where in America this is a taboo that's not to be touched.

Kino's Journey - If you're into die-hard drama and consequence, this one is for you. Takes a good, hard look at modern day dillemas in a not so nice way. A real thinker if there ever was one.

Tokyo Godfather's - A drama with just the right mix of humor. This is another good one for adults that aren't familiar with anime. Crossdressing is not exactly rare in anime, and this one forces you to deal with it. It also takes a very hard look at life in Japan for the homeless. I picked this title up because I was curious how a homeless trio with a baby wound up being invited to a Yakuza wedding. I was not disappointed, and neither will you be.

Millenium Princess - Drama at its best. A sad tale at its core, this is a love story. The main character falls in love with a revolution fighter that she runs into by chance. They are separated and she winds up being asked to star in movies. She takes the job in hoping that her love will see them and find her after the war. When you finish the movie, ask yourself if you're happy for her or sad for her. The answer to that is harder to come by than you think.

Windaria - This isn't quite a full blown anime. It was made by Carl Macek (Robotech) and released on Orion video. It is done in the Robotech art style, though. This is a very, very sad fairy tale about love, greed, war, and corruption. Have the kleenex ready if you watch this one.

Hm, i think a few Ghibli films would be in this section..I'll do that.
Please bear in mind I might get this a little jiffled. But for drama/slice of life,
    I know plenty. Hee hee.
Well, Whisper of the Heart(movie by Yoshifumi Kondo based on the manga
by Aoi Hiiragi, is 111 minutes long)is basically Drama/Slice of Life.
It tells the story of a young 14 year old girl who doesn't know what to do with
her life. This girls name is Shizuku(see? I'm my user name there's a reason its there)One day she decided to chase a cat named Mune(watch The Cat Returns to know more of our fellow cats)who leads her to the mysterious Seiji and The Baron, a mystical cat figurine.
Of course, i find this hard to write completely but this:When Seiji leaves for Itali Shizuku tries to complete a novel in the months he's gone. It's basically
both drama and slice of life of how a girl learns who she is. Another is Only Yesterday,, but I'm afraid I haven't seen it yet, but it IS of this genre too.
Or watch Nausicaa, Princess Mononoke, Pom Poko for enviromental uses
and their dragic tales of death.
Heee, your going to have to watch them if you really like this genre, but I seriously recommend the first two the most. Thank you!
If you wanna know more, pm me.

Has anyone heard of Air TV?

    Air TV

Yukito is a traveling performer - a wanderer. He survives with only the clothes on his back, a puppet, and a story from his mother -- the story of The Girl in the Sky. He doesn't know who or where she is; only that he must find her.

On the verge of starvation, he is befriended by a young misfit named Misuzu, whose eccentricities serve to hide a troubled home life. Misuzu offers Yukito a place to stay, and in return he listens to her dreams -- dreams in which she lives in the sky. To make ends meet, Yukito takes odd jobs from the local doctor, where he meets Kano - another girl with an odd fascination with the sky.

As his search moves forward, Yukito finds that the possibilities are as numerous as the pitfalls. Will he find the girl in the sky? Does she even exist? The answers change with the breeze. The questions are up in the Air.

Are there any good anime or manga series as good as Death Note? I it when characters use their wits to out smart each other.

    I gotta reccomend GTO
Onizuka, a former bike gang member attempts to become the greatest teacher ever. This show is a hilarious drama that will shed tears and summon laughter with each and every episode. Most likely the most inspirational anime I have ever seen.

Slice of Life? I recommend Honey and Clover and its 2nd Season. It really defines "slice of life drama". Also, Lovely Complex, great story and character development. Last, Genshiken, well, its a good anime.

Thanks for Clintonio for the rotating sig hosting.

Aria's a pretty good slice of life story. Only the manga though, the anime is just... horrible.

Genshiken is a great slice of life anime/manga especially if you watch lots of anime, read lots of manga or play lots of video games then you can relate with alot of what the characters do and say in it. I found the manga much more fulfilling than the anime

I thought I'll just make a recommendation to a great Dramatic/Slice of Life ongoing anime. Not sure what the ending will be, might change my opinion but I seriously doubt it unless they screw it up big time.

    Kimikiss Pure Rouge

You'll be thinking 'What the hell? What kind of title is that?!'. Don't be put off, my first thoughts were the same but now I would have slapped myself if I didn't watch it.

When I say Dramatic, I mean in terms of Dramatic Romance. There hasn't been an Anime I've watched yet that contains the same genres, that's made me feel so mixed up with my thoughts on who the protagonist is going to end up with.

I seriously recommend it to the people seeking out Slice of Life/Romance and more importantly; Drama.

Default slice of life with scary alien monsters

I just got done watching Figure 17. It's weird to see a slice of life anime with alien monsters, but it really works well. Great story, really touching and sad, and great characters (I love Tsubasa) plus great action scenes. You might think this would be under horror or action but trust me it really is slice of life. Oh and each episode is 45 minutes and not the standard 22 minutes.
everything is in our mind, but when it causes us to grow an extra limb I think we should take it seriously.

    I recommend the following series:
    1. Kashimashi ~Girl Meets Girl~
    2. Blue Drop
    3. I''S
    4. Mai Otome (Haven't watched it yet)
    5. El Cazador de la Bruja... (Of course it has a slice of life theme...)

Still have to watch a more animes to increase my recommendation list in every theme...

    Ouran Host High School Club
An anime with a slice of life, romance, and drama..Ouran is the perfect anime for anyone who is interested in the following. Its characters with their own personality, unique background, and comedy. It also has drama, such as their pasts and such(for example, the truth behind Tamaki's past and the Twin's pasts, also). The manga is way different than the anime(even the art is different from the anime).I say the anime is better than the manga.=3 Ouran is a good slice of life anime for everyone.

Lucky Star and Clannad are great Slice of Life anime. They're both based on high school setting...and even have similar characters (i.e. cute twins) but they're just really entertaining. can watch it when you want to just laugh and relax.

I recommend "Welcome to the N.H.K"
It's about a hikikomori NEET called Tatsuhiro Satō. It's a drama based around his meeting with a girl he has never met before who seems to know a lot about him. It also involves his experience trying to rid himself of his hikikomori ways.
Very good, has lots of drama and comedy. A strong recommend for drama fans.

I loved Honey and Clover,Welcome to the NHK Nodame Cantabile,Only Yesterday. Could anyone recommend similar animes to me which are also great ?

Not a big fan of Genshiken or Ouran High School so maybe that helps with the recommendation a bit more ?
Do you know of ‘The Magnificent Steiner’ ? The main character was normally a weak, sickly man. When he was in an emergency, someone would come and help him. A secret friend. But, the main character never realised...that his secret friend....was himself.

MY ULTIMATE SPECIALTY!!!!!!! As it stands about 20 of the 80 or so animes I've seen are slice of life. As such it is hard for me to list all that come to mind but 2 Heart is the perfect definition of slice of life. I saw Genshiken up there, just started watching seems real good, Comic Party is also really good and pretty similair it even has the same number of episodes and seasons. Azumanga Daioh is the ultimate slice of life comedy. Onegai Twins is good as well as Ai Yori Aoshi and Love Hina. Bokura Ga Ita is a little bland but also very good. Those are some of the main ones I can think of off the top of my head and if more are needed there are more where they came from. And yes, Onizuka kicks #&% from every direction.
